Austria okays export of 30,000 handguns to Iran

VIENNA, Austria
Austrian authorities have approved the export of 30,000 handguns to Iran, local media reported Friday, days after a report that sophisticated Austrian rifles were finding their way into the hands of Iraqi insurgents.
Austrian media reported the pistols had been sold to Iran's interior ministry, which is in charge of the police force.
Austrian economic ministry officials told state radio that their ministry had approved the sale of the "Glock" pistols last month, saying Iranian authorities had provided documentary evidence that they would not be passed on to others.
Another request for the weapons from the Iranian army was denied after it refused to give such assurances, said the officials, adding such sales to police were allowed under legislation governing the export of weapons.

While's it's disappointing to hear of Austria's decision, tons of our own stuff has no doubt already made it to Iran through countries like France. Once you decide to sell something to somone, it's impossible to say where it will end up or what it will be used for. Syria comes to mind but I digress.
Money talks and loyalties walk. I can only imagine how many of our own American-made guns and rifles have slipped in to places like Iran over the last 30 years courtesy of other countries we openly trade with.

Is Iran at war with Austria or anyone else? Sounds like a business deal to me. Simple as that. At least they're getting paid and making profit. How many much heavier weapons have we GIVEN to unsavory regimes over the years that were paid for by our tax dollars? 0 -

For those of you who feel like boycotting Glock, y'all might want to consider boycotting H&K since the Iranian military was also granted a license by Germany to manufacture G3's. 0 -
The firearm manufacturing business is complicated at the least.
Are there any US manufacturers that make sales to third world nations that could be considered unethical? Or does the US Government buys the weapons, then acts as the middle man to struggling third world nations. Or are US manufacturers too expensive for the international market where cost is key.
ANother quetion, If Iran was buying handguns for their "friends" in Iraq, would they be buying Glocks of something cheaper made in Pakistan, Romania, or some other low budget former soviet block nation? Glocks might be too much of a high end hand gun for Iran to buy for Iraqis.
Plus I wonder if it would be a good investment for Iran. Wouldn't they get more bang for their buck buying something other than handguns?0
