First of all...welcome to the nut house.
Under $800? You left yourself a good range of options:
Remington 700 series (SPS, BDL)
Savages with the Accu-trigger
Tikka T3
If you want iron sights, that is different...not that many out there anymore.
What would your primary use be for this rifle? Hunting from treestand, stalking, mountain hunts (elk, mule deer) or something totally different?0 -
Primary use would be hunting deer from a tree stand. The area of which i would be in is woods in norther IL. 0 -
Im also a left handed shooter.
-thanks0 -
Any of the major manufacturers would be a safe bet:
Remington 700
Ruger Model 77
Winchester Model 70
Savage
Tikka
Browning A Bolt
For around $800 you can buy a nice rifle and put a good scope on it.
The best way to choose is to go to a store and pick up all the different models and see how they shoulder for you...feel if the comb is right for you...does it balance in your hands...is the length of pull good or is it too long/short.
All the major manufacturers are reliable...how it feels in your hands is what matters.0 -

Remington 700's are a nice choice. 0 -
I recommend Rem 700's .... they are reasonably priced and well built. Here are my Rem Lt hand 700's.

Being that you are a Lefty, I am going to say go with a Savage. Great gun for the price and it will leave you a good chunk to spend on some nice glass. And still keep you at your budget in the end.

As jon0322 said, Savage is the one for a lefty, nice rifle in anycase 0 -

when I left Il. deer still had to be taken with a shotgun and slugs. I don't believe it has changed. [:)]0 -

I believe Illinois no longer permits left handed shooters hunting licenses anymore. As I recall it was about 5 years ago when the state legislature decided that since there were 2 L's in the state, anyone associaed with L's (e.g. lefties) would not be allowed to hunt as it could potentially hurt the image of Illinois being an anti-gun state. Please reference Illinois Gun Laws http://www.isp.state.il.us/docs/ptfire.pdf0 -
