i look for stricter gun laws in the near future or a tax on them. the real concern will be the control of ammo since the weapons are useless without it.[V]

Republicans are pretty much a wash if they can not change on the war. There are a lot of votes backing not being in the war. The only one I thought with the right idea was Ron Paul only one with enough nuts to disagree with the president.

I'm a little rusty on Constitutional law but don't the states have to ratify an amendment to the constitution?

Sure it could happen (total firearms ban), but it is highly unlikely. In fact, it would probably make more sense to worry about the earth being struck by a comet, or meteor first. Considering the number of firearms that exist in this country, then consider how few people would willfully surrender their firearms. A civil war would likely be the result and there really wouldn't be any winning side. Just a bunch of dead people on both sides of the legal fence for no justifiable reason. Proposing such a law would probably be the end of that individual, or party's political future. They would go down in history as "the cause" of civil unrest within their own country. Personally, I believe that someone would snipe them before it got that far. You can only push the people so far. [;)]

I disagree. If a ban were implemented and a turn-in mandated, backed up by the threat/certainty of a long prison term, almost everyone would be rushing to turn them in.

Don't kid yourself. Talk is cheap, action, when your personal freedom, or your very life, are at stake, is a rare commodity.

**(The following questions are generic and not directed specifically at you HobbyGuy)**

Are YOU going to refuse the turn-in, knowing they will come eventually? Are YOU going to "take to the hills", like a renegade, when the day comes, if you decide not to bow down and surrender? Are YOU going to "ruck up", or "cowboy up" and shoot it out when they come for your guns?

    Are you????

I think that when it comes down to the brass tacks, most will meekly surrender. Some will not, most will. I also think that the fed knows that and will be counting on the sheep to do as they are told. The divide and conquer tactic for the remainder will likely suffice.[V]

I am not saying that a large number of freedom minded folks won't step up, I just don't think it likely that there will be sufficient numbers who will risk everything. I doubt that they can organize effectively and don't think that the outlaws among us will be enough, or survive long enough, to make a difference. The fed has an iron fist on us if and when they choose to squeeze.

If broad resistance to a ban took place, then things may be different.

I hope that I am wrong and we NEVER get to the point where those decisions need to be made.

If a total ban happened I would sweat, bleed, and die in a civil war against it.

You might see a revival of the ban that sunseted, but I doubt it would even get that far. The president cannot unilaterally revoke the second amendment, so congress would have to pass it. The Democrats that took over Republican seats are from gun friendly districts for the most part and will be unlikely to support any substantial gun control legislation, especially any sort of ban. They have been burned on the issue already and won't want to touch it. And the Republicans still have a substantial minority and the ones that are left will never support a piece of legislation that is guaranteed to lose them one of their last reliable voiting blocs. I have no doubt that any of the Democratic front runners would sign such legislation if it got to their desk, but I doubt that the Democratic legislature, other than a few die hard gun control loyalist, would be willing to take the political hits to get it there, especially when they have so many other issues that they can win on. Gun control is probably going to be on the Democrats back burner for a while.

Lets face it. Mabe not by 2010, but shortly after it (when 250,000,000
of those here now are forced to allow this Mexico/Canadian/American
consolidation to become law) our Constitution will be burned and only a
memory. Right now, other countries have more say on our justice system than Americans have. We have given away our freedom, ignored our law
enforcement on borders and immigraton to all countries, so what can we expect. Much too little done and much too late to prevent it. Damn glad I wont be around to see the Nation I fought and bled for over 60 years ago pass on this way. What a short life for such a once great country.

I'm probably wrong but I seem to remember that the first 10 amendments( the Bill of Rights) can't be taken away BUT they can be altered by later amendments. This would be a major constitutional fight that even many liberals would come to the aid of No.II amendment. If 2nd amendmnt can be changed then it opens up the freedom of speech, press religion etc.

I have been reviled and vilified for 40 years as I have talked about the steady slide into tyranny facing this country. Today there is a growing segment in this country smart enough to finally see it, themselves.alas, too late.

The government has used the intervening time to spend prodigious amounts of money extracted from compliant citizens, bleating for `safety', to make resistance nearly impossible. The slimy tentacles of government extend into every area of life..and their control is nearly absolute.

You bought and paid for slavery.enjoy it.

Perfectly willing to go to foreign lands and fight for "American Freedom", at the behest of the government .and coming home to ever increasing controls, restrictions, rules, taxes..the American male is brave, attacking anyone daring to raise objections about a police state.yet an abject coward when it comes to resisting that state.

Don't think they will ever outlaw guns -- too many people would raise hell about it.

However, they may try to regulate ammo to make it real hard to come by...

Before that comes into play a proposed amendment must either pass both US House and Senate by a 2/3 vote, or a Constitutional Convention must be called by the legislatures of 2/3 of the states.

Either way, an amendment must be ratified by at least 3/4 of the states.

Statistics show that there are as many as 500 million firearms on Earth at this time - that's one gun for every 12 people. The important question here is "How do we arm the other 11?"
