MLK Party Texas Style - The Next Generation?
I watched the below report on Fox News tonight. Hannity and Colmes along with Juan Williams was clueless as to why students would do something like this:

DALLAS - Authorities at Tarleton State University said they plan to investigate a Martin Luther King Jr. Day party that mocked black stereotypes by featuring fried chicken, malt liquor and faux gang apparel.
"I feel like there is no excuse for this type of ignorance," said Donald Ray Elder, president of the Stephenville school's chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Photographs posted on social networking Web site Facebook.com showed partygoers wearing Afro wigs and fake gold and silver teeth. One photo showed students "mocking how African-Americans do step shows," Elder said. In another picture, a student is dressed as Aunt Jemima and carries a gun.
"That upsets me," Elder said. "That's someone who knows nothing about Dr. King, because Dr. King was totally about nonviolence."
Wanda Mercer, the school's vice president of student life, said an investigation was planned into the Jan. 15 party.
More than 400 students attended a university-sponsored forum Wednesday night that Elder described as "a shaky baby step" in bridging a divide between black and white students on the campus, which had about 400 black students out of 7,800 overall last semester.

Elder said he sensed a racial divide at the forum, with black students sitting on one side of the room and whites on the other.
"It was civil, but it also escalated into a shouting match," he said in a telephone interview afterward.
Some of the students shown in the photos apologized, Elder said.
University President Dennis P. McCabe said the photographs were reprehensible.
"I am personally insulted by these photographs and am disappointed that Tarleton students have demonstrated such insensitivity," he said.
Stephenville is about 60 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

While in college, I attended to several parties in which we mocked Roman stereotypes, from garb to baccanalia, and no one raised a fuss.

Lowrider- If the party was sponsored by a campus organization, like a fraternity or other club, the university has a stake in the situation. The photos posted on the Internet reflect badly on the university and all colleges have policies about student behavior embarrassing the institution. If it was truly a private party then the school would have no say. But the students made their activities public on the Internet.
It was a serious of dumb moves from acting like jerks to publicizing their asinine antics.0 -

Seriously, these students got drunk and used MLK day for the reason. Was anyone outraged when college student get drunk on that mexican holiday, phyinco-de-mayo-or-whatever.
Somebody realy needs a size larger underwear. It is binding a little.
Heck, do you think Bill Clinton got stoned at an anti-war party back in the day? Probably.

After giving this some thought, I think it's simply a slap in the face for the politicaly correct community. I have witnessed for the better part of the last ten to fifteen years that it's cool to make fun of this crowd which really gets hammered in social circles, and rightly so, even among liberals, and especially, the military.
The military community also represents to a noticeable extent, what is and is not fashionable in terms of coming trends, social or otherwise. This has a lot to do with their leadership and day to day contact and mixing with people, not only at home, but abroad.
I believe these college students see no harm in acting out against the politically correct movement since it is a big part of their enviornment, both in and out of the home, media propaganda and all other agendas aside. This said, I'm convinced that this generation will go far in putting a stop to the injustice they suffer, and bring about fair play for all.0 -

Off campus, non school related event (see "PRIVATE") I say no foul. The chancellor should go only so far as to say "the university has no connection with the events, as it was a private function, off campus property." Save the moral carping. Any of you been to a "theme party"? Greek, Roman, redneck/trailer trash party?
Get over it, people!! Don't bite at the race bait!! True, I would probably not have participated in such a function, but this is still AMERICA, and we have the right to piss off anybody so long as we don't physically harm, threaten, libel or slander anyone. We have the right to act tastelessly if we so elect in other words. Hopefully, all the negative press will embarass these young folks, and they'll learn a lesson in humanity/humility. But that is ALL that we can hope to come out of this, and only if they are intelligent enough to recognize the error of thier ways. But, it is still our right to be a dumba$$.0 -
I have another point: Why are the students attending a forum run by members of a known racist organization like the NAACP? Was it a voluntary function, or was it mandatory? Do all of our colleges and universities in America actually have a NAACP organization on campus? 0 -

Personally I think it was a rather admirable way of attempting to understand and empathize with a different part of society for those courageous young students. They made the effort to study a different culture, obtain the necessary accoutrements needed to function as a member of that society and then having taken all of those steps of understanding they sought to honor MLK by conducting themselves in a manner similar to MLK's people....If somone was offended by these young progressives displaying their respect to MLK and his people I really think it is the other person's problem.
I think it is exceptionally racist of certain people to think that ONLY they can behave in a certain manner...as if ONLY they have the right to use certain language and certain behaviors. I'm sure they will have more than a few Texas lawyer fighting for to represent those students' First Amendment rights. Beach0 -

Why did the students act that way?
Because it's fun to do taboo things, and college students are always doing shocking things. Heck, it was just another manufactured reason to party for them. The reporters were shocked because it makes good TV. Is anybody else shocked that college students sometimes do stupid stuff? Does anybody really give a flip?0 -

You can defend the idiotic actions all you want, they were still stupid and the intent was racist. They want to do that in private that's their business. They can be stupid in private all they want. But agree or not, the students do represent the university and when they made their asinine displays public that crossed the line.
