Military Shows Off New Ray Gun
"Active denial system" mounted atop a Humvee

MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. (AP)- The U.S. military has unveiled a new weapon. They call it an "active denial system," but that's putting it gently. It's a ray gun that shoots a beam that makes people feel as if they're about to catch fire.
But before you start thinking of a phaser set to kill, the technology is supposed to be harmless - a non-lethal way to get enemies to drop their weapons.
Military officials say it could save the lives of innocent civilians and service members in places like Iraq and Afghanistan.
The weapon, mounted atop a Humvee, was demonstrated to the media at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. Three airmen and ten reporters volunteered to be zapped with the beams. Anyone hit by the beam immediately jumped out of its path because of the sudden blast of heat throughout the body.
Officials say the weapon is not expected to go into production until at least 2010.

Wow, pretty soon we will have communicators and work with aliens.
More power Scotty!
0 -
And it probably needs its own power plant for power? 0 -
More work for those batteries that just keep going and going.[:D][:D][:D] 0 -
I think it is a load of bull but these types of non-lethal weapons are a violation of the Geneva Convention. Anything designed to inflict pain is prohibited...blah, blah, blah... 0 -
Fox News is going to show something about it.
Anything non-lethal is probably cruel, unusual, and a source of abuse.0 -
"He's dead Jim." Well not really, but I always wanted to use that, and what better place than a ray gun thread. 0 -
Hey-alright! I am all for a new type of flame thrower even if there are no flames.
Al the torturer0 -
I wonder if that thing will be at the Superbowl for rowdy fans ? 0 -
I really dont think at this time in the war on terror that we need non lethal weapons. I think we need politicians and commanders that are willing to actually KILL the enemy instead of thinking about new ways to spend billions of dollars just to make them feel a little heat stroke. 0 -
So people can "run away from it" why can't they run away from it while they are still armed? 0 -
what b.s. they haven't even tested it on us yet 0 -
Can the cops use it to keep donuts warm? 0 -
it's made by raytheon, check their website for a product data sheet and video. and check this out.
"Various commercial and military applications include law enforcement, checkpoint security, facility protection, force protection and peacekeeping missions. The system is available now and ready for action."
basically, let your imagination run wild.
you can be assured it will be abused at one time or another. somebody's going to get cooked to death.0 -
An aside but cool idea...
I think the thing runs in the microwave frequency and I remember reading that one of the experiments done on moon dust was to put it in a microwave. In the microwave it quickly turned into a liquid and then cooled to a solid rock. So I say we use this ray gun to pave roads on the moon...not sure what good it would do but what the hey...
We now return to our regularly scheduled ray gun thread...0 -
does it put out "microwaves"?
well, they say it uses "millimeter wave", meaning the length of the wave can be anywhere from 1 to 10 mm long. that corresponds to a range of 30 to 300 GHz.
a household microwave typically puts out 2450 MHz, which is 2.450 GHz.
so, the answer is, it's close to a household microwave but higher frequency.
like the difference between a 900 MHz cordless phone and a 2.4 GHz cordless phone. higher frequency gives you more penetration and longer range. note that the newer models (2.4 GHz) do in fact put out the same microwaves as your microwave oven.
what makes it strong, though, is not necessarily frequency but intensity. like giving the same light bulb more power, and it gets brighter. same wavelengths, but more power = more intensity.
so yes, this crowd cooker is a very high powered microwave.0 -
and another important point of contention is that while they say it only penetrates to 1/64" in your skin and so doesn't cause permanent damage, they ignore the fact that your eyeballs are microwaved just like the rest of your skin. which can result in permanent damage. 0 -
Did y'all see the size of that contraption on top the humvee? Cripe it could be shot at like a large round target from 1000 yd. I foresee a larger intensity unit used to shoot down flying objects. 0 -
This is what the military ADMITS to having.
What else do they have?0 -
Yeah, I am still skeptical. As long as the masses have firearms that can shoot this thing out, what good is it. The contrarian in me wonders how fragile it is.
Of course if the masses did not have firearms, this thing could be useful.
Also after reading some other ideas listed above, I am reminded there are some theories out there that link Gulf War Syndrome with giant microwaves used by the American military.0 -

it says on their website that it doesn't matter if the dish gets bullet holes shot in it. it's just a reflector. you would have to shoot that thing that hangs over it.
what would be easier and probably more effective, though, is figure out what material reflects microwaves and aim it right back at it.
if you take a square box and remove 3 sides, so you have 3 sides left, you know what that looks like. a corner. ok, glue a mirror onto each surface on the inside. whatever light you aim at it, it will reflect the light straight back at the source no matter what angle it hits the 'corner' at.
example: there's one on the moon so they can aim a laser at it and it reflects back, so they can tell how far away the moon is to within a few millimeters.
so, make one out of whatever reflects microwaves, and just set it there. walla. fried microwave-zapper-operator.0 -
Mylar suits?

Late 70s-early 80s; I helped lay out the site work for the Free Electron Laser Testing Facility out in WSMR.
They wanted a 5-square-mile buffer in a 20-square-mile exclusion zone.
There was also a job that involved a certain aircraft and its' facilities near Alamogordo that I don't think I can talk about yet.
Suffice to say it had a Special Purpose Doohicky mounted on the fuselage that did amazing things to solid objects.
It's possible to make your own version of the military's new "ray gun"; build a Yagi-Uda antenna out of a Pringles can and use it to direct the energy of your old microwave's emitter. Simple enough in this age of technology and the Web.
I still like the nausea cannon idea; low-frequency sound waves would harmonize with naturally occurring electrical impulses within the human body, causing evacuation of the entire gasto-intestinal tract.
Can't very well fight the enemy with a pair of poo-filled BDUs!0 -
Lotsa strange stuff goes on at White Sands...
The nausea cannon is a great idea, those ragheads are so full of it --they would be paralyzed!0 -

Please, please, gentlemen, it is not a rag...it is a small sheet. Rag head is insulting...the correct description is sheet-head. Manners gentlemen, manners.0 -
This is nothing new. We had a Ray Gun back in the 80's. It was called "Ronald Ray-Gun". 0 -
If aluminum sparks in a microwave I wonder what would happen if you were holding an AR15 when this thing hit you?
What about titanium pins in your leg?0 -
I'll be ready !

or shoot some glop on the reflector dish so it isn't reflective anymore. a well-placed water balloon full of paint should do something to it.
unless they install windsheild wipers.0 -
"The people gaze fascinated at one or two familiar superficialities, such as possessions, income, rank and other outworn conceptions. As long as these are kept intact, they are quite satisfied. But in the meantime they have entered a new relation: a powerful social force has caught them up."

In the first wave the masses flung mud. Then they discovered poo sticks better, cattle manure actually. In the second wave they came with bats and stones. It was brutal. Technology losses to the tools of ignorance.
Yeah, I am skeptical. Then there will be a new round of diseases.0
