    ..I heard that one of the new guidelines of the AMA is to have Pediatricians ask kids personal questions about the parents behavior.

    ...Wow, called my daughter to tell her not to leave the room when the kids are at the doc's and "why"; she said she had already experienced the Doc "snooping" [:0].

    ...Daughter said last time the 9 year old was at the doc's the PA ask him if his parents smoked (they don't) and she went off on the PA and told her how the cow eat's cabbage (That's MY girl [^]). IF the PA/doc want's to know something..ask HER, not a 9 year old! PA stopped with that one question....so, it is at least happening around here to some degree...[^][:(!][xx(]

    I've experienced this first hand...my daughter's doc back east questioned her about firearms. When I found out about it, I called the doc and went off on her.

    We never, ever leave the kids alone during doc visits.
    Either my wife or me stay by their side.

    My kids are 11 + 8.

    That's a load of BS. Why is it the doc's business if "dad" has a gun? I went through college wanting to become a doctor but have decided against it. Part of changing my mind was because it is not about treating anymore but about money, lawsuits, and politics[V]

    because sometimes its the best thing to do. children have the same medical needs as adults but lack the maturity sometimes to talk about akward problems in front of their parents.
    almost every doctor will have a nurse present in the room when a minor isnt with a parent. most states have laws that require it.
    if you are too paranoid as a parent to leave your child alone for 10 minutes with a doctor then you better just keep them inside your house chained up all day.

    I think there are 2 sides to this story, and each has some merit. As in many other areas, there should be a balanced approach instead of some radical politically-motivated nonsense that it sounds like is happening, especially in MA.

    One side - some children really are in danger of physical or sexual abuse in their own homes and would not be able to talk about it in front of their parents. A little privacy with the doctor could go a long way towards saving a child from a terrible situation.

    The other side - while safety is an issue a doctor may be concerned about, he/she has absolutely no right to determine from a few minutes with my minor child if I am fit to own a firearm, or whether I drink or smoke enough or too much.

    Children do not understand a lot of things, and should only be asked about things they are capable of knowing. One of the many things wrong with our country today - many adults (apparently doctors included) do not understand that children simply do not have the capacity to understand a lot of things. I would put drinking and guns in the category of things children are not capable of making judgements about.

    Bingo. I haven't established enough trust with a doctor to allow my kids to be alone in a room with them. Doctors can be child molesters like anyone else and their job allows them excuse to get personal with a child. My job as a parent is to be there to make sure everything that is personal is on the up and up.

    I am not speaking about a teenager who might have the same medical needs as an adult, I was speaking of a child,.....IF the child is being hurt in any way at home, that is probably going to be discovered in school, not seeing a dr for 10 minutes twice a year...

    I did not, nor would I ever, leave my child alone with a dr...even if there was or wasnt a nurse present in the room...A child looks to the parent for comfort, for safety, for love and the assurance that the person who has their hands on the child is not going to hurt them, and there is no way a nurse (stranger) can convey that to a child...

    one of us stayed with our kids at the drs at all times, and this was the same doc i went to as a kid and knew all those years!
    if there was a bruise etc he wanted to ask about (the start of the drs getting into the child abuse bit) we just let them talk and sat there waiting as we had nothing to hide.
    but if questioning like this would have been going on then it would have stopped as it is none of their damned business!

    several years ago we had a doctor ask my middle son if we had guns or drugs in the house,he was around 14 at the time and was just in for a pre year sports exam,,he looked the doctor straight in the eye and told him to go F himself,the doctor came out and was on my ass about my sons language and manors,when my son came out I asked him why,,when he told me why,I looked the doctor straight in the eye and told him,,my sons right you can go F yourself..the doctor called my sons school and told them we could never come back,if he ever needed another physical he would have to go to another doctor

    I never thought of this doctor/spy loophole before.

    Police cannot interigate a child without the parent present, but a doctor can have some degree of obligation to report anything found.

    I'm surprised this loophole isn't used more often.
