Question for FFL holders:
What's involved with getting an FFL? Can anyone who passes the background checks get one? Do you HAVE to buy and sell guns to have one?

From what I understand you get yourself a store front, it will be inspected and if your clean you may get a license. If you plan on doing it at home, you need to have a seperate entrance into the business that is not accessable from within the home, it to must be inspected. The application isnt too complicated, just bunches of red tape..At least thats what the ATF boys in Tampa Florida told me.. 0 -

ATF will approve the application if the applicant:
Is 21 years of age or older;
Is not prohibited from shipping, transporting, receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition;
Has not willfully violated the GCA or its regulations;
Has not willfully failed to disclose material information or willfully made false statements concerning material facts in connection with his application;
Has premises for conducting business or collecting; and
The applicant certifies that:
the business to be conducted under the license is not prohibited by State or local law in the place where the licensed premises is located;
within 30 days after the application is approved the business will comply with the requirements of State and local law applicable to the conduct of the business;
the business will not be conducted under the license until the requirements of State and local law applicable to the business have been met;
the applicant has sent or delivered a form to the chief law enforcement officer where the premises is located notifying the officer that the applicant intends to apply for a license; and
secure gun storage or safety devices will be available at any place in which firearms are sold under the license to persons who are not licensees ("secure gun storage or safety device" is defined in 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(34)).0 -

You are required to be in the business of buying and selling firearms...and they evidently have some kind of quota but they will not tell you what it is. It is not legal to obtain an FFL just to purchase guns for yourself or your friends. 0 -

You can also hold an 01 FFL for a gunsmith business and never sell a firearm.0 -
I have had as few as 18 transactions, (either to a ffl or on a 4473) in a year and the batfe considered it ample evidence that I was in business, and not just using the license for my own benefit I think they are looking for people who are using their license for their own purchases, not the "small" businesses
The biggest hurdle is the zoning, you must be legally able to operate a business from you home, in the township I live the planning department got tired of the batf dictating to them, and pushed a ordinance to allow small home businesses.[:D][:D]

I really think you should try to work IN a gun store before you try this type of thing. It isn't as easy as people think. There are a LOT of crazy rules and some things are different pertaining to where you live. With every transaction it is a potential MESS. I really wish the ATF agents were required to be in a gun store for at least a YEAR before they got to have badges. 0 -
If interested in getting FFL for your own use- look at the 03 Curio & Relic Collector FFL. You do not need to be "in the business"- matter of fact, it is not a license to be a dealer in any arms. No zoning headaches, no business license, its $30 for 3 years- and covers any firearm that is 50 years old (or older) OR is on the BATF Curio list- like Colt Woodsmans, Winchester 88s, etc- regardless of age. Most wholesalers also give you a discount. Visit cruffler.com for more info. Does not do anything for new guns, but there is a LOT of stuff out there that is 50+. 0 -
It's a lot easier to do it without licensing or permits. Federal law? No problem.
Get some kind of ID at a Check-Cashing store, or ask our new arrivals where they got theirs.0
