I'm About Done Fighting "assault" Term
For years I have spoken out against using the term "assault weapon/rifle" because it was not an accurate term. In addition using that term caused it to become more widely accepted and gave the anti-gun crowd more power in their never-ending efforts to ban semi-autos and then onto banning all guns.
However, sadly, I have decided the term is here to stay forever. The anti-gun crowd uses it, the media uses it, many of my fellow gun owners use it and even many gun magazines and even some gun manufactueres use it. It even appears in some dictionaries. It appears I am trying to hold back the ocean with my hands if I try to, even in my own small way, stamp out the incorrect use (if there is any "correct" use) of the term "assault weapon".
But all is not lost. Just as with a flood of water running through your backyard that could damage your interests (house, property,) just as the common use of "Assault weapons" can damage your gun rights, if you cannot stop it, then DIVERT IT.
From now I will use the term "faux assault weapon". Just as a faux Rolex is not a real Rolex. Just as a faux pearl is not a real pearl. Just as faux fur is not real fur. Just as a faux diamond is not a real diamond. Just as faux gold is not real gold.
A faux assault rifle is not a machine gun nor is it a true (if such exists) assault rifle.

I've never understood the hooplah over "assault weapon" as terminology. We have to call it SOMETHING, don't we? Would it be better if we called it a zuniferiousbulletschpittinwhooptyfezgimometer? Or what about a "magazine fed semi-automatic gas cycled shoulder fired long arm?" if we wanted precision? Give me a break. The term assault weapon/rifle came about for a reason: that's what it was originally called in the form of the strumgeweher which means, literall, storming or assault rifle. The original example operated on exactly the same principles as everything that followed in its wake. The original terminology stuck, as original terminology tends to. who cares what they call it? I proudly tell everyone who asks that I own assault rifles and plan on getting more and more and more. To hell with them if they don't know the history or uses or anything else about my guns. 0 -
It reminds me of Mark Christian and Judge Colt telling people over and over that Colt and S&W (and all other handguns) don't have grips...They have stocks. 0 -

Maybe so. But the anti-gun side is not killing us gun owners by using such words as "grips" or "stocks". They are killing us by slamming us with the word "assault rifle". That is all they need mention "assault rifle" and their side of the argument is already won. And from there we gunners have to not only try and present our argument but have to do it while fighting ourselves out of a hole.0 -

While you are saying in the red above, the anti-gun crowd is saying "the hell with your gun rights". You will not be happy when the Democrats pass a new "assault weapons" ban or when your own town or city passes one of their own. Anything that can help us, does help us. No matter how small such as not buying into the anti-gun use of the term "assault weapons". If nothing else, think about how weak a position you would be in if you had to stand in front of your city council and your fellow townspeople and loudly claim that "I don't give a damn what you think, I have a right to own my "assault weapons". You would be about like a possum in the road and a big truck was headed your way.0 -
When the Supreme Court rules that gun ownership is an individual right we won't have to worry about a new ban.... 0 -

The term Assault Rifle is inflammatory hype the opposition uses against us to work on the unknowledgable public. They begrudgingly hold the only valid reasons for private ownership of guns are hunting and target shooting competition.
Here we are helping to put gasoline on the fire. It's really crazy to play into their game as many of us are doing.
Supporters of the term include gun sellers in their efforts to add drama and appeal to a gun whose intrinsic value is a fraction of market price.
The term sniper rifle is another bad one. Snipers are BAD, BAD, BAD.
It doesn't bother users of the term because there are no nerve endings in the foot they shoot themselves in.0 -
A dung-head on SigForum classified recently headed his post "FS - Assault Rifle ..."
And this guy is a dealer, of some sort.
Certainly not the tone I'd want to set, with the Anti's lucking on sale sites looking for ammo against our "evil doings".
I wonder how New Jersey legislators feel about the fact that a PA resident, legally able to own firearms, can have, delivered to his house by the USPS, a Barrett .50BMG, from another resident of PA? Buy from a guy in Harrisburg, have it shipped to Chester ...
Or California pols, for that matter?
It's our more sensible laws that keep them pushing for a nationwide ban.
Trotter, instead of giving up or coming out with a weenie phrase[;)] like "faux", how about practicing a convincing argument, even recording your words until they come forth with conviction and backbone?
