    No, "to much time on your hands" would be if you went to much greater
    lengths to customize what you built...wire/pearl inlay and such.[;)]

    Looks like it should serve your purpose.

    Your plywood material looks like the stuff that we used to make concrete forms out of. That material had no voids and had a dark hard plastic veneer on both sides.

    Yep...and I hate those forms! ...not the project, the wood concrete forms.

    I also like the semi-auto stands that have a single vertical that slips inside the mag well.

    Lighting and focus is the toughest part for crisp pictures.
    A tripod, the camera's timer, contrasting backdrop,
    and lots of indirect, reflected light make a world of difference.

    Note, even this $2600 gun has a focus issue:
