? on a project similar to Nwcid's pistol

Anybody know what kind of BS is involved in making a pistol from a rifle reciever?

When I lived in Montana we used to hike in to a lot of mountain lakes and go fishing. I always packed my Model 66 S&W in case one bumped into a bear that was just too grumpy. I always wanted something with more horsepower and thought that it would be cool to have a 30-06 pistol styled after an XP100. With that thought in mind I figured an '03 Springfield would fill the bill and when I found one it was just too nice to cut into a pistol.

So there sits the project almost 20 years later. An '03 Springfield in the cabinet that is low enough numbered it shouldn't be shot anyway. Any ideas on how to go forward?

  I am talking out of my butt here, but I think someone got it right on that other thread. It has to be a new receiver that was not used or marked as a rifle. I've got a November issue of Shotgun News in the bathroom that I have been slowly reading and a guy did a great article on building his own AK from a parts kit. He made one as a pistol and one as a rifle. When I read that other thread, it jogged my memory and I think that article said about about the same thing. When he was complete, he labeled the receiver as a pistol
  
  An AK with the small mini clip and short barrel as a pistol would be alright.
  
  WHen I'm in the library later today, I'll reread it. I too am curious.

  Once a rifle, always a rifle. As I understand it, you have to buy a new receiver as a pistol receiver if you want to be legal.

  Found the article in Shotgun News Treasury 6 -- A Collection of the Best Shot Gun News Articles Published in 2005. Like I said, I think I bought it in November and have been slowly reading it ever since. It was a good issue.
  
  According to the article, home built projects can only be built for personal use, not resale. The receiver must be classified as a pistol receiver or rifle receiver. Sounds as if this is done easiest by buying a "virgin" receiver. When the receiver is bought make sure the receipt indicates "pistol". "When you buy it have it listed on the BATFE form 4473 as one or the other and also have it listed on the receipt that specifies which it is." The rear of the receiver needs to be modified so that it will not accept a stock. On the guys AK job, he welded in a plate across the back of the receiver and inserted an I-Bolt like you see for straps. Looks good. It can also not accept a forearm grip. The ATF's rule about only having 10 import parts only applies to rifles, not pistols and the barrel length is not limited. It can be as short as you want.
