Best groundhog caliber.
I'm going to go with a cz vermit,but what caliber does everyone think would be the best for mostly groundhogs and some cyotoes, I may want to deer hunt with this rifle also.Heard the 204 is a very fast caliber with good down range specs.

I agree with D@D, the 204 is too small for deer. Any of the larger ones you listed would work but I have always thought the 7mm-08 would be a great white tail round. Might be cheaper to shoot the 243 unless you plan on reloading. 0 -

Ground hogs are not very large, so generally they shoot handgun calibers. I often see them with .40 S&W. 0 -

Go with the 223. ammo is readaly avaliable. Use it on prairie dogs and deer myself. And, a coyote won't know what hit it. All I shoot is the 55 grain. 0 -
Well with a ground hog, use what ever you want, personally I would go with a .308 but if you want get a CZ Bolt in 7.62x39 0 -

i would have to believe that the 204 would not be legal to use for big game, at least around here...what the muzzle energy on the 204?

Check your state game laws for deer legal caliber- here in VA it must be at LEAST 23 caliber. For groundhogs I have used 22-250, 220 Swift, 222, 223, and 243 (and .308 Acclerators, but they cost WAY too much to shoot now) Like them all, but my 220 is closest thing to a death ray I have ever owned. Your mileage may vary. Closed course, professional driver. 0 -
223 if you don't reload (NOT good for deer).

243 can be used on deer. EXCELLENT flips and destruction on PDogs.0 -
25-06 or 6mm will work well for varmints or deer. But just for groundhogs this works very well. Bushmaster M-4 .223 with an Acog scope.

25-06 shoving an 87gr Sierra SP. Good to 600 yards and will handle the wind. Great for deer, and even elk if you do your part.

For one caliber, for groundhog, deer, and coyote, I'd say either the 2506, or the 243. Either will serve you well. 0 -

.243 wouldn't be my first choice for deer, but anything larger wouldn't be my first choice for groundhogs either. and you're hunting mostly groudhogs.0 -

Thats a fine choice for a factory built firearm, but, If it were me, I would go with a really nice custom built rifle, heres why.
Most true custom built rifles use a douglas or better quality barrel,
usally a mauser action {I prefer the 1909 argentine with hinged floorplate}, a true custom will have the bolt face squared, a feature that will greatly add to the accuracy of your weapon.
With a true custom you can pick the grade of wood, I go with only Exb + wood, it makes each a work of art so to speak.
A true custom the stock will be fit to your specks, thus helping you be on target in half the time, a rifle that fits you is a pleasure to shoot.
And in years from now when you hand the custom down to your kids, provided you took care of it, they will have a treasure to pass on to their kids.
A far as cal. Think Prem. ammo avail. and you will find the 243 or 22-250 are exc. choices. I love my 6MM but if you don't hand load the 6MM is limited to only a handfull of choices.

You guys have it all wrong. The flatest shooting cal. is the 257 weatherby, check it out. It is the flatest and hardest hitting at 400 yds of any modern cal. out there and plenty big enough for deer. 0
