Shameless Plug-Auctions Listed
I need to help my son pay for a class trip to Europe so I've listed some of my stuff to sell, like Colt SAA w/Ivory, Century H&K91, Belgium Browning Auto 5, Yugo SKS, Remington Wingmaster 20 and Dillon Reloading equipment.

Why do reserve auctions? Just be upfront about your minimum acceptable price. 0 -
I have tried different things with my auctions and continue to try things as I go along.
Usually I will tell people my reserve if the auction is more than half done. The market does some weird things at times and I am just trying to protect my interest.
That along with the fact that I am selling this stuff more because I need the money than because I really want to get rid of them. When I get the money I need, I will allow the listings to run out and then put the rest of the guns away for another day.
Another thing is because I don't have hundreds of feedbacks, and am not as well known as some other sellers here, I think some people may be reluctant to bid. For example, I repeatly listed a beautiful Colt Stainless Officers ACP and even lowered the price. Meanwhile the sellers here known as "joe and deb" listed one in lesser shape and sold it on the first listing for more than I had set my reserve. My cousin stopped by the other day, saw the gun, liked it, saw it shot like a house afire and told me he would take it for my reserve with no problem. Now I have no problem with "joe and deb" and often look at their auctions myself, but why didn't my gun sell and theirs did?-they had a reserve on their gun as well. That's another reason why I place a reserve. If people would check my feedback, I think they would be impressed-I try very hard to be honest and work very hard to represent the gun honestly and I think it shows in my feedback.0 -

I think if you were to do a no reserve on the Wingmaster you would probably sell for the price you have there and get really close to your BIN price. 0 -
My reserve on that gun is less than my buy-it-now price. If you are correct, a bidder should be able to get it. That is why I sometimes don't put a buy-it-now price on the item. 0 -
I just removed all the reserves except those 2 items with bids already on them and even reduced the prices on a couple. Let's see what happens. 0 -
I always start my auctions at $1 with no reserve. I have sold over 50 guns this way and have only been burned on one auction (I paid too much for the gun in the first place). By starting at $1 it gets folks bidding. The ones looking for a steal drop out early, but that gets the bid count up and into the Hot Auctions catagory. Add a thumbnail pic and pay the extra couple of bucks to list it as a featured auction. When someone does a search the featured auctions pop up first. I usually list so the auction ends on a Sunday or Monday evening, but always in the evening.
Gunbroker is a National market! The market is so huge, there are so many people brousing the auctions, that you are virtually guaranteed to get market value for your item. If you get a bid war started an item may even go rediculously high. I love it when that happens.[;)][:D]0 -
I can appreciate where you are coming from GUNFUNCO, but anyone who spends any time searching the auction side has figured out how to use the "smart search" to narrow down the field, and one of the options to click is "exclude reserve auctions". I, and a lot of other people that use this feature will have never even seen your listings, and could care less if you had a good deal or not because we NEVER bother with reserve auctions.
I've heard a few folks try to rationalize their reasoning for a reserve, but if you truely want to sell the item, there is no difference with starting it at your reserve price and go from there. If nothing else you get more looks at your auction from folks like me that exclude reserve auctions.
I, myself, have never been burned on a $1 start no reserve auction and in most cases the item brought more than I would have put for a BIN. Good luck on your auctions![8D]

Personally I don't even bother looking at reserved items. It doesn't make a bit of sense to me. If you're not willing to sell for less then a certain amount just list it at that amount. 0 -
Thanks for the advice on the reserve. I'll strongly consider it and may try a few penny auctions.
You guys would be surprised though. I recently listed a SKB200e double with the auction starting at $950.00 (with no reserve) when the next cheapest one on GB had a cracked stock and was not as clean as mine and had the bid starting at $1099.00. Others started at $1499.00 (look for yourself under SKB200e) (mine was auction #61326373) After one 7 day auction cycle, I did not relist and sold it locally for $1000.00. Since then I have had no less than 4 different GB buyers contact me to ask me if I still had it and would I be willing to sell. I was seriously underpriced and had a buy-it-now of $1049.00 and no one even bid my minimum with no reserve. Can you tell me why.
As to my kid & the job, he is 14 and will be going to Europe in June of 2008.
He will be at Normandy Beach on his 16th Birthday where my father fought in WWII. I want him to make the trip. I wish I could see it as well.
He worked 6 days a week for several weeks this past summer de-tasselling corn for a local farmer. If any of you have ever done this, you know what difficult work this can be. He is at the farm at 7:45 am and walks down rows of corn picking off the tassels so the corn can cross-polinate to create hybrid seeds. He works over 8 hours a day in the hot sun walking with his arms up in the air picking off tassels, comes home scratched, exhausted, wet and filthy. Showers, eats and maybe plays a few video games and then goes to bed to do it all over again the next day-all for minimum wage.
He gets all A's & B's in school, wrestles varsity while still in 9th grade, plays football, baseball and runs cross country and track. Last week he wrestled a senior (4 years older and at least 3 years more experienced and made him work all 3 periods before he could pin my son.
He ran a 5 min flat mile in the 8th grade and just missed the all time 8th grade mile record for our whole town by about 1/2 of a second. He already has a job lined up at the golf course for this summer, Right now, he and his younger brother shovel snow for a lady that lost her husband a year or so ago.
He works very hard and I would nearly sell my soul to send him on that trip. I just finished paying off his braces this month-our share-a little over 3 grand, but I don't regret it a bit-I love to watch him smile.
By the way, he weighs 130, which is 15 lbs less than he did in 7th grade. His coach wanted him to compete in the 130 lb class in wrestling. Instead of complaining about having to give up goodies, he eats tiny portions and then tells me he thinks he will be faster yet this year in track. He has the heart of a warrior.
Now I don't want sympathy. I put $20 G's in savings bonds away for each of my 2 sons for college before I retired this past September. I never went to college until I was 26 and working-went for the police academy. I don't want them to have to wait for college.
I have money stuck away for later in my retirement. I wasn't planning to touch that money for at least another 10 years, but I will take some of it out in a minute to send him on that trip.
This weekend, he is going to Washington DC to stand on the steps of the Capitol with about a dozen or so other kids from our church to meet with thousands of other kids from all across this country to peacefully protest the Roe vs Wade Supreme Court Decision which allows millions of unborn children to be killed by abortion every year. I have never been to DC and would love to go as well. I still hope to get there soon.
BUT I HAVE been to the Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, I have taken a ski trip to Killington, Vermont and Lake Tahoe, Nevada. I have white-water rafted in Pennsylvania-twice-and been to see New York City-neither of my parents ever got to do any of these things that I can recall. My dad was in France, Germany, Belgium and more in WWII.
My parents probably saw more than their parents, I have seen more than my parents and my kids will likely see more than me and my wife have.
And that is the way it should be. So I will sell a few guns that I don't shoot much or at all and help my kid see the world while he is young.
An older couple we met in Hawaii told us that travel is a much better value when you are young because you get to keep the memories for the rest of your life. I like the way they think and am willing to sell a few toys to give my kids the best. They have worked hard and deserve nothing less from me.
Oh and guys, I'm not trying to "flame" you, only wanting to let you know why it is so important to me that he is able to go.0 -

It has been snowing on & off for about 3 days now.came home from the auto show last night after midnight and had a dusting of snow when I took my kid to weightlifting at 7am.

$2000.00 is about what I have seen ivory gripped SAA's going for. This gun is already about 20-21 years old, I think.
I have another SAA that I will be listing soon. I never looked at the paperwork until I went to take the photos and discovered that it was a special edition and Colt enclosed a card for a free factory letter. The gun is a 3rd generation 44-40 with a case colored black powder frame, unfluted cylinder, and CHECKERED walnut grips with 4 5/8's(?) barrel. Anyone know what the special edition was?0 -
Don't let the no reserve guys poo pah your auctions. Anyone that REALLY wants a weapon to fill a gap in a collection will bid.
Any unusual German or Japanese advanced collector weapons get my attention if you have any.0 -
