Border Patrol, Mexican police catch smuggling, robbery suspects

U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Sector and Mexican police officers caught a suspected smuggler Thursday night in San Luis, Ariz., according to a Border Patrol news release.
The smuggling suspect is also believed to have robbed a passerby in Mexico while waiting to enter the United States illegally.
Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, agents working near San Luis observed a group of five individuals, including two alleged smugglers, enter the U.S. from Mexico and responded to the location. The suspects promptly fled back to Mexico by climbing the fence, according to Border Patrol officials.
According to Mexican police officers, once back in Mexico, the group was waiting for another opportunity to enter the U.S. when a man walked past the group at about 9:45 p.m. The two smuggling suspects stopped the individual, brandished pistols and robbed him of the equivalent of $40 and his shoes, police said.
The other three in the group flagged down a passing Mexican police car to report the incident, causing the alleged robbers to flee the scene by climbing the border fence and entering the U.S.
A Border Patrol agent spotted the smuggling suspects and was able to apprehend one, a 17-year-old male, while the his partner fled along the fence before climbing back into Mexico. He was apprehended there by Mexican police.
Both individuals were positively identified by the robbery victim, as well as the individuals waiting to be smuggled into the U.S., the patrol said.
The captured 17-year-old was transported to the Yuma Border Patrol Station for processing, where a records check revealed multiple prior apprehensions. He faces prosecution and being formally removed from the United States, at which time he will be turned over to the Mexican authorities.
