Remember the upside down Space Pen?
Remember when NASA first started sending up astronauts?
NASA quickly discovered that ball-point pens would not work in zero
gravity. To combat this problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12
billion developing a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside-down, on
almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from
below freezing to over 300 C.
The Russians used a pencil.
America - gotta love it!

This is an old myth that's been passed around for many years.
Fisher pen company developed these pressurized cartridge, write anywhere and on any surface pens completely on their own. They offered them to NASA so they could use this "space pen" angle as a marketing tool. They were more than happy to accept them because wooden pencils pose a fire hazard in an oxygen rich environment.0 -
Interesting - didn't know that.

12 BILLION?Also part of the myth. I don't know how much it cost Fisher for development, but you can bet it was only a fraction of this amount.0 -
