Kinda dumb question, but...

Can an M1A be used for deer hunting? I know it's a .308 caliber, a popular hunting size, but does anyone actually use that particular rifle for hunting? I'm trying to find other reasoning (to convince the wife[;)]) besides "using it for defending against the next War of Northern Aggression."

    Sure, why not? People use the Evil Black Rifle as well.

    You could buy it to defend against the next War of Southern Rebellion if you wish. [8D]

    Depends on your state law and clip size I used my M14 several years ago with a 5 rd clip.---

    If I were to go hunting this year, my only choices would be either my Ruger 44 carbine (good choice) or my FN-FAL.

    I think I'd choose the FAL....

    That's the reason I used to justify buying mine......

    While I have not hunted with my M1A you could. I hunted with a scoped FAL one year when I didn't have a better choice. While it is not legal to hunt with .223 rounds I would hunt with my scoped AR. With the .223, ammo choice and range would be 2 big things to think about.

    Being as you live in GA, the answer is "YES". We don't have any stupid magazine requirements to worry about.

    From the GA Hunting Regs:

    DEER & BEAR FIREARMS: Modern Rifles and Handguns: Centerfire Only, .22-cal. or larger with expanding bullets.

    That is unless you plan on hunting in Clayton, Cobb, Dekalb, or Fulton counties; or Jekyll Island. Only archery equipment can be used in those places. Half of Forsyth county only allows muzzleloaders or shotguns (slugs or buckshot) as well.

    Thanks, Handgun. I didn't think we had any stupid restrictions. I don't really plan on hunting with it, but I figured you could.[;)]

    I didn't like it as a hunting rifle....

    In my 30-30, I have a rifle that is smaller, lighter, (much) cheaper, and kills deer just as well....

    Pointless. Give me your lowest start price and let the market take over. The only result I see from them is that many auctions go through time and again without selling. It is a rapacious tactic to get people to spend money they don't have or should spend on less obnoxiously priced commodities.

    I think that he may have been replying to the "Reserve Auction" thread and clicked this one by mistake.

    BTW, if you still hunt, I would go with Rack Ops and say use something other than the M1A. If you stand hunt then take it out a couple of times just for fun, as you won't be lugging it around all day. Plus, it is nice to have instant reload sometimes.

    Indeed. Right now I hunt with my Remington 700 (.270), but I also have a Marlin 30-30. I haven't taken it out yet, as I didn't sight it in before the season started. Maybe next year I'll use it for comparison.
