smoke grenades
anybody know anything regard the legality of militry type(pull pin, throw etc), specifically in mass?cant seem to find anything

I've seen them for sale along with teargas canisters.
The website specified that the teargas was LE only but the smoke grenades anyone could buy.0 -
If you are looking for something for a training exercise, check with some of the commercial HVAC companies. They use some pretty large ones for testing evacuation systems.

As far as I know, they're completely legal but expect that shipping charges will be steep for the GI type burning canisters. 0 -
Just remember one thing when using smoke grenades...DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES allow a "cook-off" period between releasing the spoon and throwing the grenade. 0 -
Maybe smoke grenades have changed since the '60s, back then they had the same type of fuse as a frag, which is basically a blasting cap. If that's the case today, I'm surprised they would be legally available to civilians. I never knew anybody who let a grenade of any kind "cook" before throwing it. Throw it spoon and all. 0 -
Sometimes, depending on the target, it's acceptable to cook a frag grenade. Usually when you don't want it coming back at you, like when assulting a bunker. 0 -

so what is the official verdict on frags?
R Lee Ermey said that you don't want to cook since that "4 second" fuse is not always 4 seconds. Some say that it is preferred to cook off teh grenade.
I do know for a fact that German potato mashers had a long fuse (like 6 seconds) so the fool kraut who did not cook off got a potato masher right back at him [:D]0 -
The only time I was told to cook a frag was while assulting a bunker from the rear. Crawl up along side it, pull the pin, give a 2 second cookoff, throw it in, and roll away. 0 -
US Military smoke grenades do not have a blasting cap- the fuse has an igniter. Delay is TWO seconds. Standard frag grenade has FIVE second delay (if the folks at the manufacturing plant were having a good day) There are 3 basic smoke grenades- colored smoke for signalling, white HC smoke for screening (hiding behind) and White Phosphorus (WP or Willie Pete) which explodes, burns, produces dense smoke very quickly that also goes away very quickly. ALL are dangerous to use in a confined space, since they burn and suck up oxygen. ALL can set things on fire. Some do a REALLY good job of setting things on fire![:p] 0 -
so the general consensus is theyre legal for everbody above 18 regardless of state. great

11b6r, it's been a long time, but I seem to remember smoke going off with an audible pop. Do they still look like a tin can with a fuse screwed in the top? I remember unscrewing a fuse and seeing what appeared to be a frag like cap. 0
