For you gardeners
This will be our third year for a vegetable garden this year.
We planted...
4 x Better Boys
4 x Beefmasters
4 x Super Fantastics (had great luck last year with them)
4 x sweet cherrys
2 x sweet grape
2 x Tomatillos
8 x Jalapenos (always do well)
4 x Green Bell Peppers
4 x Cayenne's (did fantastic last year)
I water them(via sprinkler) for 1 hr in the morning(4:30-5:30 or 6am) when I am on nights. I don't fertilize, the first year I tilled in about 200lbs of Horse Manure which gave good results. I've been reading that overfeeding Tomatos with Nitrogen results in lots of foliage and little fruit. They need phosphorus instead.
- Does anyone have a phosphorus fertilizer that they use? How have your results been?
- Also, I have 3 bales of straw that I plan to lay down in about a 2' circle around each plant. Should I go ahead and get mulch or stick to the straw?
- Any other tips you can give me to help my peppers? The bell peppers did much better last year than the year before. The Cayennes did GREAT last year along with the Jalapenos. I've heard that they like HOT soil. I thought about getting that plastic mulch to lay around the hot peppers. I believe someone said sulphur.
- Has anyone tried to grow Habaneros? I live in NW Central Indiana and think it may be too cool of a climate to grow them, however the Cayennes did great.
- I plan on building a soaker system for the garden this year. I water via lawn sprinkler now, but would like to just build a series of soakers. The garden is essentally 4 plants wide buy 9 rows. Would it be better to run a "header" down a short end, then run 4 lengths of soaker hose down each row? Should I just stick with the sprinkler?
