I had been laboring under a misapprehension too. All this time I thought President Reagan, the Congress, the Afghans, the CIA, and to a less extent the U. S. Military had a little to do with it, but it turns out Mister Wilson pretty much did it by himself with all the above working against him. [:D]

And who knew the stinger could be used against U. S. assets.

Oh hell, yes. Anything having to do with a Southerner that deserves recognition by history has to be buried quick and deep. It's a wonder that Andrew Jackson is on the twenty dollar bill today.

Its also very convinient that he is a democrat and his socialite friend is a raving left winger.
I just cant believe how hollywood is so embracing of americas involvemet in the mujahudeed when for the past 17 years they have done nothing but talk about how imperialistic REAGAN, REPUBLICANS and the EVIL CIA were for killing so many innocent people in that country for a natural gas pipeline.
Isnt it ironic that american forces are in afghanistan right now fighting against americas enemies and rebuilding a worn torn country and hollywood makes a movie about a democrat who had VERY LITTLE to do with the entire afghant war.
Lets also remember how eager and supportive democrats and liberals are to wage war and to stick their noses in the business of other countries. I find it hard to believe that they supported this war.
In fact, if you look back at THE FACTS and the CONGRESSIONAL RECORD you will see nothing but opposition to americas involvment in afghanistan by democrats.
everything Reagan and the CIA and the military did there was oppposed by democrats who controlled congress.
America deserves the majority of the credit for defeating the soviet union in afghanistan and charlie wilson deserves just about none of it.
in addition, he plastic surgery socialite drug addict liberal commie had NOTHING whatsoever to do with the effort.
    pure liberal hollywood BULL SNOT

kimi, Charlie Wilson is a Southerner in the tradition of Lyndon Baines Johnson, Jimmy Carter, Moscow Bill Clinton and John Edwards. He will tell you in a heartbeat what a great hero he is.

I almost thought it was funny, then I realized it's history now. It has been on TV and there is a movie.

More revisionist history from the likes of wierdo-wood.

I personally could care less if the fella is from the North or the South. This is simply yet another attempt to make history more acceptable to the liberal masses.

I am sure the movie-going audiences will love it.

I love how Charlie Wilson is now being credited with winning the cold war and destroying the Soviet Union. It almost made me forget about Ronald Reagan.
Thankfully for liberals the new generation in America knows nothing about history because they are too busy learning transgender appreciation in school.
Ronald Reagan led the fight against the communist Soviet Union. Ronal Reagan won the cold war, no thanks to democrats who opposed him in every way.

Hey, James. I'm not saying the guy was not a liberal democrat, far removed from the likes of the typical Southern democrats known as Dixiecrats, but the program did show where Reagan, Congress, and the CIA were involved, and to dismiss these facts is wrong. The show was about how Charlie Wilson lived his life, and politics and the subject war had to do with the part he played. And, from what I saw, it was done pretty good.

You obviously did not watch the program. The program was not titled Ronald Reagan's War - His war was the Iran Contra Affair, remember? And, yes, reagan approved the use of the "Stingers" right? Without which the war would have been lost. I'd say that was a part that any fifth grader could pick up on.

are you talking about the program on history channel ? or should i say "our version of history channel"
please read up on the facts. there are about 20 good books on the subject, many available at barnes and noble.
if a single nobody congressman can single handily defeat the soviet union in afghanistan, how come 300 democrats in congress today cant even defeat george bush ?
i have a feeling 25 years from now there will be a new film that comes out "Nancy Pelosis War on Al_Qeada in Iraq: The True Story of How One Courageous Congresswomen Fought Islamic Terrorist Forces in Iraq When No One Else Wanted To" ..leading role to be played by Jane Fonda

Wilson first entered politics as a teenager by running for office in home town of Trinity. He lived next door to city official Charles Hazard. When Charlie was thirteen, his dog, Teddy, got into his neighbor's yard. Hazard retaliated by mixing crushed glass into the dog's food, causing fatal internal bleeding. This led Wilson to decide to run for office against his neighbor in the next election. Being a farmer's son, he was able to get a driving permit at thirteen, which enabled him to drive 96 voters from poor neighborhoods to the polls. As they left the car, he told each them that incumbent Hazard killed his dog. After winning by a margin of sixteen votes, Charlie went to his neighbor's house to inform him of his victory and to tell him he shouldn't poison any more dogs.

As an adult, Wilson stayed out of politics until he was moved to volunteer for the John Kennedy presidential campaign.

...Ed Wilson offered to form a 1000-man force of ex-CIA operatives to fight on Somoza's behalf. The meeting broke down when Somoza fondled Tina Simons, Charlie Wilson's girlfriend at the time. The deal also proved impossible because Ed Wilson asked Somoza for $100 million to pay for the force.

I'm talking about the program on TV. Did you even take the time to watch it and compare it with what you have read? If you did you will fully understand that the story was centered on the life one man, Congressman Charlie Wilson from Trinity County, Texas, and the part "he" played with the subject war.

Charlie had some liberal excesses like women, drink, and being pro-choice, but he was FAR removed from the typical type of liberals that run the MSM, or those who masquerade as conservatives at Fox News, or in Washington, D.C. Had he been like these Blue Blood New England elites, and their puppets, he could not have survived politics in his part of SE Texas. Do you have the slightest idea of the type citizen in this part of the South? When Charlie tried to make much of his district of SE Texas a part of the Big Thicket National Preserve for the flaming posers, he had his you know what handed to him, and he straightened up quick and acted right. Had he not done so his career would have ended on this very issue, and I would imagine that no one realized this more thoroughly than Charlie.

I have no problem at all with Charlie Wilson. I even like the guy. However, Americas involvment in Afghanistan fighting the Soviets was started and finished with very little influence from Charlie Wilson.
I can think of about 100 people who get more credit in this conflict than Charlie Wilson. Even more so, there are a few unamed American heros who actually died in the field fighting "charlies war". I cant name these people, almost no one can name these people because their identities are classified.
Lets not forget the almost 1 million Afghans who died during this war, people who showed a little more courage than Charlie Wilson. People who took up a rifle and fought a super power. People who werent smoking crack with hookers in a jaccuzzi and then claiming to be a "brave hero".
It is utterly disguting and historically incorrect to call this "Charlie Wilsons War"

You really do need to watch the Charlie Wilson's War as it is currently presented before making such claims. And, what's with the comparison of him and combat personnel? Watch the program, then make your comparison, you don't seem to have any idea as to the way it is being presented.

Do you believe that heroes are without vices? If so, enlighten me by naming a few who are.

You're certainly entitled to your definition of what is and is not disgusting. However, something tells me that you're simply going to have to suck it up and continue to march before you can change it one bit.

That's funny, if you had actually bothered to WATCH the History Channel program before commenting on it, you would have seen that the roles of ALL OF THE ABOVE were discussed. It talked about how Charlie wanted to send Stinger missiles to Afghanistan but there were those in the Pentagon who were concerned about Stinger missile technology falling into the hands of the Soviets. It was Ronald Reagan who unilaterally made the decision to send Stinger missiles to Afghanistan, so Reagan's role WAS credited. So was the CIA, especially the role of CIA agent Gust Avrakotos and his team who were largely responsible for America's covert actions in support of the Afghan mujahadeen.

The History Channel special interviewed several top CIA officers from the time and they all credited Charlie Wilson with playing a huge role in expanding America's support for the Afghan resistance. So much so that they had the very first Stinger missile launcher used to down a Soviet helicopter in Afghanistan mounted on a plaque and given to Charlie as a souvenir. The Pakistani military made Charlie Wilson a GENERAL in their Army because his role was so large.
