9mm the same as 9x19mm ?

This is a total newby question, but are they the same ammo?

What does 19mm mean (the length of the round?....same length as regular factory 9mm rounds).

    9X19 is broken down by:
    9 = the caliber of the projectile as stated in MM
    19 = the length of the cartridge case as stated in MM

    so 9X19 is a cartridge case that is 9mm in caliber and 19mm long. Here in America we refer to it as the 9mm Luger or 9mm Parabellum.

    There is no such thing as a stupid question, how else are you going to learn if you do not ask?

    OK, they are identical as mainstrean/regular reasonably priced factory 9mm (Luger)rounds sold at Wal-Mart, Academy, etc.

    Now as Noise has stated there are many different types of 9mm cartridges, but 9X19 is the same as 9mm Luger or 9mm Parabellum. You can't just say "it's a 9mm, it'll work", make sure of your cartridge designation before proceeding. The last thing you want to do is to load a 9x18 into the chamber of a 9x19, or a 9X19 into a 9X21.

    Or 9x17 into any of the above (to the OP, 9x17 = 9mm Kurtz = 9mm Short = 380 Automatic)

    One other thing. The 9X19 Makarov has a slightly larger diameter bullet than the 9X19 (Luger/parabellum).

    So the two are NOT interchangeable

    To the OP, Yes, the 9x19, 9mm Para, 9mm Parabellum, 9mm NATO and 9mm Lugar are all the same round, it's one of those few cartridges that has more than one common name.
