Colt Diamondback value

I purchased a 2 1/2 inch bbl. diamondback 38 some years ago at a good price because it was pitted - no rust, but lightly pitted.(obviously had rust that had been cleaned off). This revolver locks up tighter than any revolver I've ever seen. I am not a Colt revolver fan, I prefer S&W revolvers but Colt semi-autos. I had the gun parkerized with a green tint and looks fine. Finish is very durable. An old friend shows interest in it but I am not sure of the value. A search for compleded auctions on diamondbacks shows that an old reblued one, with the old reblue mostly worn off, sold for $545 !!!!!
What would be a fair price to put on this one ?????

    Thats more of a friendship question. You could always list at a penny and have him bid on it. Then you will both be assured of a fair deal.

    According to the gun collectors digest, a re-finished diamondback is worth about 350...

    Standard catalog of firearms lists it lower at 300 re-finished, cause as the collectors book stated, re-finishing it finished it for price as well...

    And I know several dealers who wish they could BUY at Blue Book or SC prices.

    If you know dealers that wish they could buy at book prices then they must be buying at the wrong places..[;)] I have wholesale books with way lower prices than the blue book or the collectors catalog..

    I knew it wasn't a collectable when I bought it. When I saw the reblued one sold for $545, I was really surprised.


    OOPS ! Just rechecked auction #64650349, It sold for $455. check it out. I think mine is in better condition, even though both were refinished. I really didn' t think a refinished one would be worth that much.

    Its worth whatever someone is willing to give you for it.

    $350 seems like a fair price to me. . .though you might be able to do better on the open market.

    I love the idea of letting your friend bid on it on Gunbroker. That way there are no hard feelings or second guesses later.

    If the thing sells for much more than what either of you thinks its worth, so be it; neither one of you is disappointed. A lot lower, and your friend get a bargain.

    Also, your friend would be at a competitive advantage at auction because presumeably he wouldn't have to pay shipping and handling costs, and if he were to win and you cut him a little extra slack on the price anyway. . .well nobody would know or complain, would they?

    You could also run it at auction with a very high reserve to see what its "worth" (ie what kind of bids it gets) with small likelihood of selling it. That could form a reasonable basis for a sale price.

    iy you can find one the Williams bluebook of wholesale prices it gives a better idea of legitimate prices

    If you can buy Colts out of a wholesale catalog below BB or SC I'd sure like to have access to your catalogs!![:D]

    Hmmm The action on these babies is so smoooth. what you have there in my opinion is a very good CCW firearm. Who in there right mind would use a primo Diamondback for ccw. It is just too collectable. So when you come across a "good shooter" I am not in the least bit surprised that it brings a good price. A perfect weapon for mom/wifey in my opinion.

    you are right on target !!!
    That is exactly why I bought it. It was my wifes carry gun. It shoots very well. She now carries a S&W model 638, a little smaller and lighter, since we are getting older.
