Anyone here ever build a G3 from a parts kit and virgin receiver?

    How much of a virgin is she?

    I've built several ... easy builds. The receivers were already welded and had the trunnion and cocking tube installed. All I had to do was press in the barrel, head space and pin, modify the FCG and make sure my parts count was right ... then what ever finish I wanted.

    I can tell you if the trunion and cocking tube aren't aligned properly it will never be right ... I bought someones home build before and had to rebuild it. I've seen many floating around gun shows that were off, just a "smidge" but a 1/16" at the gun will make a huge difference at 100 yards and you may not even be able to sight the gun in ... as was the case with the home build I bought.

    The part that has me thinking is the cocking tube.
    That will need to be welded to the receiver. Right?

    I bought a Century Arms Cetme 3 years ago and after about 50 rounds you couldn't pull back the charging handle. They replaced it and it happened again after 3 years and about 1000 rounds thru it. I took it to a highly recommended gunsmith and he fixed it for $25. He didn't say what he did to it.

    Yep ... the trunnion and cocking tube are both welded in.

    My guess is the gap between the charge handle mechanism and the bolt carrier ... the cocking handle acts as a fulcrum to unlock the bolt head when you unfold it from the cocking tube ... if the gap between the cocking handle and bolt carrier is too great you don't get the lever action and cocking is near impossible. This usually happens because the cocking tube wasn't installed correctly ... yours was probably right at the outer limit of spec at assembly, as it "broke in" it went out of spec. It sounds like you got a good "smith"!

    Yea I do. Real lucky I found him. I also brought him my Great Grandpa's 32 revolver that I knew nothing about and had a broken hammer. He informed me it is an Iver Johnson and he actually had a spare hammer for it. Charged me $35 for both the revolver and Cetme repair. [:)][:)][:)]
