future weapons
Did anyone else notice that on "Future Weapons" on the Dicovery Channel the host who is a supposed former navy seal said that the AK-47 fires a .308? How can a seal make such a error? I know there are alot of current and former millitary on here. What kind of training do you get on forign weapons and ammo? I actually had to explain the difference between ammo types to an Iraqi war veteren marine! These two incidents aren't leaving me with much confidence in the training today's heroic military is getting.

Has anyone else seen this new show on the Discovery Channel? It is a show about all the cool new militay stuff and it being hosted by a guy that claims to have been a SEAL for 10 years. The fist show seemed ok and was kinda cool. The one they did tonight had many errors. They were doing a review on the Barret M107 .50 cal. The first error I caught was on bullets. The host was showing different rounds to compare. He holds up a round and says "this is a .308 round which is fired from the AK 47". Then he was making a point about it being semi auto and that you could get 10 accurate rounds out in about 10 seconds. He then goes on to say this is an advantage over a bolt gun explaining how it works. Then he says it take about 15 seconds for each round. Lastly they were shooting it at a steel target a 1000yrds. The rounds made some nice hits, but didnt go through. He then states that AP or API should do a better job but they are illegal. They were shooting in NM and I am guessing that neither are illegal to have in that state. Over all it is still a pretty cool show. 0 -
I had a drill sergeant in basic (E7, no less, with all the chest-hooah you can imagine) tell us wide-eyed recruits all about how when he was in Panama, they ran out of ammo for the M60 and had to empty the captured AK magazines and link all the ammo up so they could keep firing...

That show is becoming one big propaganda(sp?) machine for idiots. And who is he whispering to? And why...there are bombs going off a 1000 yds away and he is whispering? 0 -
I listened to a Vietnam vet talk about the Puff gunship. He said they had to have a crew member on board with a shovel, to shovel out all the empties the guns spewed out. He claimed that, if the empties were not removed, they would pile up to the point that they weighed down the plane and it would not fly.
I (not a vet) pointed out that each of those empties was on the plane, but loaded, when it took off, and thus, would actually weigh LESS after firing.
All I got in return was a dumb look.0 -

the guy was obviously thinking blonde when he came up with that excuse. I'll bet the real reason is so that the gun crew don't slip and fall on the casings. I know that B-17 and B-24 waist gun positions had gaps in the edge of the floorboards, so that the crew could push casings out of their way, to prevent a dangerous (and embarassing) fall.0 -

Bullet diameter is 7.62 on both. That's about as close to correct as he could be.0 -
he's not in the military anymore because he couldn't figure out why his 308 wouldn't eat the 7.62x39 ammo that he found laying around all over the place. he has a great thing going but he's a tool 0 -
I like the show, it has good information most of the time. but a huge issue of watching it is how dramatic it is. It makes me laugh every time. 0 -

It's only incorrect to call it a .308, when one is addressing people who may be naive about firearms.
Give the guy and channel a break - they could replace the format with stuff from LOGO.
