You see the warnings whenever you climb a ladder. But do you heed them? Apparently, a lot of people don't.
Ladders cause more than 136,000 injuries a year in the United States, according to the first comprehensive study on the topic. And the number is climbing. From 1990 to 2005, ladder-related injuries rose by more than 50 percent.
The finding is reported in the May issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
"Individuals using ladders are often not mindful of the severe risks associated with use," said the study's co-author Lara Trifiletti of Columbus Children's Hospital and an assistant professor at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. "Increased public health initiatives that target men and women, especially of working age, could help reduce the number of ladder-related injuries."
Nearly 77 percent of the injuries were to males. Broken bones are the most common injury.
"Ladders should be treated with the same respect and caution as any potentially dangerous tool, such as a power saw," said Trifiletti's colleague and co-author, Gary Smith.

I saw an EBL (evil black ladder) run up and attack my neighbor a couple weeks back. Unprovoked! It just came out of nowhere, and started hitting him! I had to call the police to come and stop it because there was nothing else I could do! 0 -

It's not the fall that I'm too worried about...it's that sudden stop at the bottom.0 -
I saw a lawyer on TV a few years ago complaining about this subject. Actually, he was complaining about everybody suing everybody for everything. He said one of his clients was in the ladder manufacturing business. He had to discontinue his shortest ladder because it didn't have enough room on it for all the warning labels.
He got sued once by a man who had to do some work on the roof of his barn. He set his ladder up in the morning while the ground was frozen. He set the foot of the ladder on a cow pie. When he came down off the roof at noon, the ground had thawed, the ladder slipped, and the man hurt his back. The ladder manufacturer lost the suit, and now he has to include a warning label about the viscosity of bovine excrement.0 -

I had a brother-in-law (now deceased) who was a glazer (hangs the glass in tall buildings). He said one of their customers was on the jobsite one day and asked him if they fall very often. He said he told him "Just once".0 -
