The worst lawyering I have seen. How could he screw up teh US attorney deal? He's going to get a presidential pass when this is all done (or even before), so that hopefully will explain his BS performance before congress. 0 -
The thing that I don't get is that the 'scandal' about firing the district attorneys got him. Huh? What scandal? Clinton fired ALL of them, Bush fired 8......they serve at the pleasure and appointment of the president after all.
I'm not saying Gonzales was anything great, just that what's been thrown against him is nonsense.0 -

I agree that there is not an underlying crime or scandal here... the problem is that Gonzales is a moron and acted as such. He seemed to go out of his way to confuse and diffuse, and his bigger problem was that he attempted to justify the firings by stating that these eight were somehow inept when he couldn't justify doing that. The easy answer would have been, "They didn't tout the White House line and they were dismissed." That's what politics is -- the Dems would have tried to make hay from it, but in the end, that's how it works for BOTH parties.0 -
Most people seem to conveniently forget that Clinton dismissed all the attorneys as a matter of course and not out of retaliation for not starting investigations against Republican candidates during a campaign season.
Scandal? You bet. But like I said, conservatives will always make excuses for folks they call "RINOs".0 -

The scary thing is, American history has never seen such a calculated witchhunt by one branch of government against another. Even Lincoln, when he suspended habeas corpus during the so-called Civil War, did not face such attacks. It scares the heck out of me. 0 -
EMM- Some people say that Clinton really only wanted 2 of them gone- one investigating Rostenkowski in IL and the one investigating him and Hillary in AR but he was smart enough to fire all so as not to draw attention to the 2 he wanted gone.
Sort of like blowing up a bus full of people when you only want to kill the driver.0 -

And why did he fire 8 DA's? Because they refused to investigate/prosecute democrats....
It's easy to say he was the worst AG, but let's not forget how much abuse the last guy, John Ashcroft recieved. Once he was run out of Warshington, the democrats had nothing but good things to say about him.
Perhaps Republicans should have gang banged Janet Reno like the Democrats have freight trained these last two AG's.

yes and no. first of all, clinton fired over 90 attorneys in his second week of presidency. did clinton give the attorneys a chance to server their country objectivly and honorably and uphold the rule of law ? NO. he fired them right off the bat for partisan political reasons. he has the right to do that.
Bush on the other hand fired the attorney 5 YEARS into his presidency and at least gave them the chance to show they were objective and fair attorneys.

the whole point of this story is presidents fire the attorneys for whatever reason they want and no one should make a deal out of it. republicans never made a deal out of clinton firing the attorneys but democrats are making it a "scandal" and got gonzalses fired over it.
democrats arent passing legislation that makes the country better, they are just complaining like they always do.

There was never anything wrong with the firings. The timing or the reason is unimportant. The prosecutors were political appointees and could be fired for not double-knotting there wing-tips if GWB or Gonzales so chose.
Gonzales lied about his involvement, and therefore is not trustworthy and therefore should have left a long time ago. What he did was not a crime, but his actions after the fact showed that he is unfit for the position.
He should have appeared before the committee and stated that yes, he fired the prosecutors for cause, as is his and the President's prerogative. The democrats could have raised hell, but would only have succeeded in looking foolish. As it turned out, he tried to placate them by lying and he correctly lost his job.
BTW - John McKay, a U.S. Attorney in Washington State, was fired because he refused to investigate Acorn (link below). Acorn in Washington State has accepted a $ 25,000.00 fine and now a number of its members have been convicted. It appears that McKay was correctly fired. Gonzales should have had the cajones to simply tell the truth.
