Robbery by Staple Gun at Local Ice Cream Shop
The "Duct Tape Bandit" is now yesterday's news in Ashland.
Police there arrested an armed robbery suspect this week. His weapon of choice was new to both the detectives and to the people robbed. Some are now calling him the "Staple Gun Stick-up" suspect.
Ashland Police say a loaded Stanley Sharpshooter, is what they say Gerald Rocchi used at the Midtown Mall Ice Cream Shop Tuesday night.
The owner says Rocchi came in, and stuck the staple gun in a terrified employee's back, demanding cash.
"She thought it was a gun, but it was a staple gun. That was crazy," Ice Cream Shop owner Butch Haworth said.
Hayworth says Rocchi then ran from his shop to the Ponderosa Restaurant next door.
Then, police say still with his weapon in hand, the suspect came in the restroom and changed clothes, supposedly to throw off witnesses, but that didn't seem to work.
"He came in with a red sweater and with will different clothes, we chased him to the house across the way," Ponderosa Manager Jason Phillips said.
At Rocchi's home, next door to the Midtown Mall, police cornered the suspect.
"We didn't know it was not a gun. We found out it was a staple gun," Ashland Police Captain Don Petrella said.
Capt. Petrella says last week, Rocchi used a staple gun to rob the Wendy's within a few steps of his home his home. Police say Rocchi did wear a disguise, not quite like this one.
"He wore a ski mask, not duct tape," Capt. Petrella said.
While a "staple gun stick up" might sound comical, all involved say this was a serious, scary felony crime.
"The girl with the instrument in her back she didn't think it was funny, she thought it was a gun," Capt. Petrella said.
It was a staple gun that felt like the real thing. The Ponderosa manager says the suspect actually came in earlier in the day, to fill out an application.
If he's found guilty, he could serve up to 40 years in prison. Gerald Rocchi is in the Boyd County Detention Center, where he declined a jail house interview.
