How much?
Just how much energy and resources are being wasted to have these political conventions? Fuel for aircraft, taxis? Salaries for the added security folks? Food and entertainment? How much of that food gets wasted and thrown away without regard to peopel in some countries starving?

I am kinda looking at used pop-up tent trailers.
I am not too picky on condition just as long as the canvas is in desent shape and it is useable. I just want something to take the kids camping this summer and possibly for a trip to CA for them to see grandparents. But I don't want it to leak if we happen to get into some rain.

You should be able to get a decent used one for somewhere around 2K, I have seen very usable ones for a few hundred. watch you local craigslist or rv.net.

I did mark a few on fleabay to watch. They are cheep ones but most need canvas work which looks like it could cost up to $1000.
One of those only has a 2" tear next to the door, but otherwise the canvas is in good shape. It is at $500 right now.
How hard would it be to repair a 2" tear in the canvas on one of these? Would it be like repairing one of the old Army tents?0 -

I don't think I would go for one on e-bay, to many things to look at in a pop up / rv (unless it was local)
If it is canvas, you should be able to sew it, some have a vinyl/canvas material, I am not sure how you would repair it.

The kids love our pop-up, but they really like tent camping too. I am just getting too dang old and beat up to sleep on the ground and pretend that I enjoy it anymore. A pop-up is the next best thing to tent camping, but the beds sure are nicer! And when it rains, it does help to have a little more room with the kids.
gir-r-done..if the rip isn't too bad or too big, it can be sewn. As a matter of fact, a canvas sewing kit needs needs to be part of your emergency camping gear if you get a pop-up. Be sure and check out the lift screws and jacks to make sure they are in good shape. That gets into some money if they go bad. Canvas replacement isn't that bad. If you are really wanting a light weight pop-up without the canvas look into a used Palamino. They are pop-up hard sides. A little heavier, but a little more durable too.0 -

There is a website that is auctioning off all the Katrina trailers(campers). Some of those are going as cheap as a pop-up. If you are interested email me I will find the website.

if you go to GSAauctions.com they have about 1000 camp trailers for sale from FEMA some of these are pop ups usually look under trucks and trailers. 0 -
if you find a link to a pop up named " apache " consider looking at it . some of there pop ups are hardsided (plastic panels i think ) . less canvas to rot or leak .
had a coleman that the mice got into . took about an hour to remove the canvas ,then another hour for an upolstery shop to repair . never leaked on me .easy job !!

My son got a 1998 model (can't recall brand) last fall for $1,000 in great shape. Seller wanted much more but was also looking at big storage bills for winter so let it go. You'll almost certainly pay more in spring/early summer than when fall rolls around. 0 -
You can replace the canvas for around $700-1000. There is some websites that sell the canvas kits. We had an '81 Starcraft and I had to repair the corners of the canvas where it fits over the bunks. I used a curved needle (forgot the name) to sew it up and then applied a sealer. Real easy to do. When you are looking at them, look at the cable lift system, roof, underside, electrical, and plumbing. As long as it's structurally sound most of the other stuff can be replaced/repaired. If the roof leaks the linoleum might be discolored (usually blue/purple). If you find an older one without air conditioning and you want to add one, the older ones can't support the weight a roof mounted A/C. We didn't have air on ours and never really needed it.
