Rock Island .45
Checking out the 1911s and fumbled across this brand. They claim to be identical to 1911 and the parts are interchangable. The good news is they cost around 300 bucks. What's the catch?? Anyone have any experience with Rock Island?

All right ,let's hear it. I'm looking to get a .45 and the Rock Island stainless has caught my eye. I read all the post a couple weeks ago on the member who just got his RI TACTICAL. The tactical is useless to me because I'm not going to put a light or anything on it. I prefer the stainless for outdoor use. Any thoughts? 0 -

Thanks,if he doesn't jump in I'll contact him direct. I'm waiting for word from my local dealer on a possible trade if he's interested so I'm doing my research first. I like the Springfields but don't think my trading piece is up to that price tag. 0 -
...no offense intended at all. The fit and finish lacks something to be desired, and if I'm not wrong, their made in the Philipines (Armscor?). Last I looked, it's advised not to install any conversion kit on a RI, especially one of a large cal...inferior metallurgy of the bolt face.
Good for the price and shoot pretty well. AS I said no offense intended, and I am not knocking RI's, just not for me...when you can pick up a Colt 1991A1 for around $500-$600 (no, not top line Colt), but at least it will appreciate in price too...or go up a tad more dollars to one of the better mods...[;)]0 -
Nothing wrong with a RI.Yes they are made in the Philipines but Armscor makes ALOT of parts for other gun companies,,,for awhile and maybe even now "I have not researched it in a couple of months" they were making the frames for some of the basic lines of Springfield 1911's..Nothing wrong with their metallurgy on their frames,people have that perception because of the price but then EVERYONE felt the same way along time about Taurus because of their prices and now they are praised.To each his own but if I liked it I would buy it.. 0 -

Where did you find a Rock in stainless? Or are you refering to an Armscor? (same gun different name).
My opinion of them is very high. I personally own 5 of them (2 standard GI's, 1 Midsized, 1 Compact, 1 Tactical) and they are all great guns. I have never had a problem with any of them. And the Armscor company has the best customer service of any company of any type and size that I have seen.
The tactical does not have the stuff you were refering too. It has the beavertail, hammer, trigger, and novac cut sights, thats all the extras it has. No light rail or that stuff.
The Rock's are every bit as good as your Colt's, Springfields, and the like in my opinion. They have the same dependability and accuracy for ALOT less money. And if you really look the value of them (even used) is going up faster than even Colt right now as far as 1911's go. The word is getting out as far as these guns and they are growing in popularity daily.
They are also fully upgradeable with any of the aftermarket parts avaible out there if you chose to do so. I currently have one of my GI models in getting totally reworked to be a full competition shooter.

I found the tactical on GB,but not in ss. There is a ss though. My choice will almost be made for me when I go shopping at my local dealer today or tomorrow. I'm gonna take my trading material with me and get something for the wife. ha ha 0 -

I bought a new RIA in .38 Super two years ago for $350. So far it has functioned perfectly and has acceptable accuracy. It has the fit and finish of a $350 gun. If you want the fit and finish of an $800 gun then you will need to buy an $800 gun. The RIA duplicates a WW II service 1911 amd in my opinion makes a great shooter.
I am told that Colt uses a one-piece forged barrel while most inexpensive clones use a barrel welded from two pieces. In theory the Colt would be better but I'm not sure if the average shooter would ever notice the difference.
Here's my RIA pictured next to my Colt Series '70 Super. I added the ivories (I favor ivory on my 1911s) and since this pic was shot I replaced the flat mainspring housing with an arched one featuring a lanyard loop like the Colt wears. This loop is sort of an affection with me and all of my Government Models have one.0 -
I have been at work all day and can't get away from here. I told my wife I should go to the gun shop and pick up the Santa suit I lent them for a thing they had going on at a retirement home last month and she immediatly said she would pick it up when she went to town.
I don't know what her problem is with me going to the gun shop.
