Bush is no Eisenhower, Lee, and damned straight not Washington. He's no military genius, but I DO approve of the surge- we'll see what happens.

You know I think Washington was totally ahead of his time. I think he kinda set the par for modern warfare against large powerful and superior imperialistic forces.

I believe his strategy was that as long as you kept an army afield, it didn't matter if you one or lost the battles, just as long as you kept fielding an army, because eventually that nation would get tired of fighting and quite. I think at the time, the british were still fighting under the (if you take the capital city, you win) rules, and still expecting to line their troops up on a nicely mowed field and have a gentlemans battle, where no one shoots at the nobleman, I mean the officers ;)

Anyone see that episode of southpark? Where Cartman thought the new kid at school was a terrorist, but ended up some russians had a nuke planted in Hillary Clintons Hoo Hoo, that would blow as a diversion for the 18th century armed red coat british invasion fleet? It was hillarious :)

Robert E. Lee: Divided his forces, and defeated a much larger Union army at Chancellorsville, in a stroke of tactical genius that is still studied at West Point.
    .
Dwight D. Eisenhower: Masterminded the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day.
    .
George Bush: Implemented the "American Surge" in Iraq.

I think General Petrauis gets the credit for the "surge".

I don't believe in holding back anything less than what will absolutely take care of a problem.

....Letting Russians fly our Navy helicopters around on AN-124's. When the Navy got their helicopters back all the guages......were popped. Guess nobody told the Russians don't fly too fregin high or you'll burst our helicopters gauges. I'm curious how high they went anyways.

....The US military has been putting RFID's on all it's cargo/equipment getting moved globally. These RFID's send out signals all the time so that some idiot in the Pentagon knows when a pallet of toilet paper exactly arrives in a country. Problem is China is into this system:

How hard would it be to design a missile guidance system to home in onto this electronic beacons that the stupid Americans are using?

    Military Genious....there are none today.

If I remember correctly, Bush sent troops into Somalia, Clinton tucked and ran.

I'm not defending Bush but this is comparing apples to oranges. Eisenhower and Lee were both career military (both attended West Point). Washington was a milita officer prior to the revolution and was appointed General of the new Continintal Army prior to being elected President.

In September 1993 Secretary of Defense Leslie (Les) Aspin turned down a request from Commander of U. S. Forces in Somalia, Lieutenant General Thomas M. Montgomery for tanks, armored vehicles and AC-130 gunships. General Montgomery said U. S. Forces were "at risk". Mister Aspin's reply to General Montgomery was "U.S. policy in Somalia is to reduce its military presence . . . not to increase it."

Mister Aspin's other accomplishments include "Don't ask, don't tell"; women combat pilots and women serving in aircraft carriers and other ships of the line.

For more of Mister Aspin's accomplishments: http://www.defenselink.mil/specials/secdef_histories/bios/aspin.htm

Mister Bush should have trusted General Colin Powell more and the disciples of Robert McNamara less. If the U. S. Forces had a well defined mission and sufficient personnel and material to carry out that mission, a surge would not have been necessary.

I thought I understood what Mister Bush said the mission was. Evidently there was a miscommunication.

When I started this thread I was being sarcastic to poke fun at Bush.
In other words, the "surge" is a disaster.
Sorry, I know that sarcasm doesn't come across well on these forums.

And pray tell please explain how the surge, that reached full troop level on June 13th 2007, can be termed a disaster? Is eleven days of full troop strength good enough for you to make a military determination of "disaster"?

I am not being sarcastic in the least...

My all time favorite military blunder:

The Russia campaign by Napoleon was a pretty big defeat.

Le grand arm?e left France with about 500.000 soldiers, a few months later they arrived back home having lost about 475.000 of their brothers in arms. This after fighting only one real battle but having lost most men to starvation, cold, illness...

I thought I was being sarcastic when I included Les Aspin as a Military Genius. I guess you're right, sarcasm doesn't come across well on these forums. [:D]

Genghis Khan - he became one of the most significant and successful military leaders in history. He united the Mongol tribes and founded the Mongol Empire, (1206 - 1368), the largest contiguous empire in world history.

Don't take my word for it. Let's see if a prominent Republican Senator thinks the surge is a work of military genius:

GOP senator says Iraq plan not working

By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer 27 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Sen. Richard Lugar, a senior Republican and a reliable vote for President Bush on the war, said that Bush's Iraq strategy was not working and that the U.S. should downsize the military's role.

The unusually blunt assessment Monday deals a political blow to Bush, who has relied heavily on GOP support to stave off anti-war legislation.

It also comes as a surprise. Most Republicans have said they were willing to wait until September to see if Bush's recently ordered troop buildup in Iraq was working.

"In my judgment, the costs and risks of continuing down the current path outweigh the potential benefits that might be achieved," Lugar, R-Ind., said in a Senate floor speech. "Persisting indefinitely with the surge strategy will delay policy adjustments that have a better chance of protecting our vital interests over the long term."

Only a few Republicans have broken ranks and called for a change in course or embraced Democratic proposals ordering troops home by a certain date. As the top Republican and former chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Lugar's critique could provide political cover for more Republicans wanting to challenge Bush on the war.

Lugar's spokesman Andy Fisher said the senator wanted to express his concerns publicly before Bush reviews his Iraq strategy in September.

...and (off topic) I don't see how it should be a "political blow", at the time it must have looked like the right thing to do, if it didn't work, well it didn't work. not his fault.

assuming you ignore "all the other republicans" and just go off of 1 guy's premature assessment.
