1 WINNER AND 76 MILLION LOSERS
1 WINNER AND 76 MILLION LOSERS
People are checking their lottery tickets this morning to see if they've won the $370 million Mega Millions jackpot. The 12-state has determined that there are two winning tickets. One in New Jersey and one in Georgia. Two soon-to-be-miserably-unhappy saps.
Now is as good a time as any to remind people that not only is the lottery a tax on the stupid, but you aren't going to win. But as the sheeple line up to thrown their money down a rathole, politicians are smiling. Why? Because the lottery is a great way to tax people without taxing people. Hey..somebody's gotta win, right? Wrong.
According to published reports, you have a 1 in 76 million chance of winning. That means you have a greater chance of being struck by lightning, or waking up next to Reese Witherspoon. According to one website that tracks such things, there is a better chance that you will beaten alive by a mountain lion. But none of this matters...such is the desire of the ignorant masses to take the easy way out to wealth, they'll be lining up at the liquor store by the millions trying to cash in.
It is a sad, sad testament to the American psyche that fully 50% of the people in this country think that they're going to retire on their lottery winnings. Pathetic.
By the way, have you ever heard of a happy, well-adjusted lottery winner? Didn't think so.

BR here...
Classic and I were talking about this subject earlier this morning...Why not give say 1 million to each household in the US?...Ecah time the powerball or mega lottery gets so big, why not divy it out?....That way everyone benefits..
I know, simple logic...*LOL0 -
$1 million to each household would amount to several times the entire GDP of the country. The entire nation "only" produces about $13 trillion per year.
There are about 300,000,000 million people in the country. If you assigned a household size of 4 each, that would be 75,000,000 households. At just $1,000 each, that would be $75 billion.
The Mega Million jackpot is just over $1 per person in the country, even if you don't allow for the cost of tickets, selling, administration, ads, etc.[:)]0 -

Quite a few people have won the big lottery more than once and at least one guy in California has won it 3 times. Hell I'll be satisfied with once. But the fact remains somebody or bodies are going to win it regardless of the odds.
I'd rather be rich and unhappy as poor and unhappy anyday. The hell with winners that are not well adjusted, I don't care just show me the money.[8D]

When the Mafia runs a lottery, it is called a numbers game, pays out a much higher percent of the revenue taken in than any state pays out the last I knew for sure, and is illegal.
Go figure.[;)][:D]0 -

I hope that wasn't for me. I'm not mad at anyone.[:)]
I only pointed out that there is a better chance of winning more money from the Mafia, and those guys get sent to jail if they get caught. It kind of makes you wonder who is really the bigger crook, the Mafia or the state?[}:)][;)][:D]0 -

When I was living in Florida, my bankrupt next-door neighbor won $4 million in the state lottery. He paid off all his debts, purchased an island, and declared himself mayor.
He seemed pretty happy.0 -

your silly opinion has been duly noted tell the spotter/truck driver scratching out a living in the textile industry that won it in Ga. that he should not play and I bet you don't get an o.k. from him I have an idea........don't play if ya don't like the odds[}:)]0 -
I've spent over half my life in public service. If you count my adult life that number jumps up to about 80% (I didn't do the math, that was a guess).
For the $1.00 chance, I take my ONLY shot at being a multi-millionaire.
Will the buck I spend break me ? Nope. Actually, I spent $5.00. That won't break me either.
BUT....when I win one, and have the million dollar giveaway Elv doesn't get to play [:D]0 -

People are also lining up to pay $4 for a cup of coffee at Starbucks, so what's the big deal about wasting a buck on a fantasy?
Now, the folks buying $100 worth of tickets because it increases their channces, they just don't understand math.0 -

OK, can I please get in on the drawing?[;)][:)]
I know several people who get a kick out of buying one ticket per week, and that's pretty cheap entertainment, and a whole lot of fun for them for a buck. I've never been interested in it, but that's just me, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a bit of fun with it if it is kept within reason.
My wife will buy one ticket for powerball when it gets up around $100 million. Boy, is she a spendtrift.[:)]0 -
The winning numbers were 16-22-29-39-42, with the Mega Ball 20. The odds of hitting the winning combination: 1 in 176 million. 0
