Internet speed
One of the 1st things we had to do in my Computer class was to test our speed. When I compared mine to other students mine was the lowest.
So I checked to see what I was paying for and it was 3 times what I was getting. Supposed to be 1.5 Mbps but all I got was .5 Mbps
Contacted my provider and complained. They reset my DSL Modem and got me up to 1.31 Mbps. Much better, and it will improve during none peak hours.
You can check two ways one at your provider(but since I do not trust them used another source) But make sure you use the same hub that your provider does so the number come out right.
The site we used for school was.
http://speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and the city I used was Seattle.

Here's the results I got;
Download Speed: 3008 kbps (376KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 248 kbps (31 KB/sec transfer rate)
Is that good or bad or what?

So I clocked our speed with Comcast economy at the best 3 Mbps we can normally watch a Netflix, Amazon or other streaming video fine as long as we don't also try and surf.
The wife's TV is connected Ethernet so it has no issues even when I surf on my laptop.
They are moving us to 25 Mbps which is probably still slow compared to those who have 50-200 or more Mbps but I am hoping to see a big increase in speed/performance for us.
$40 bucks a month to 65 bucks so I hope the 25 bucks is worth it.0 -

your download is good or i should say really good. that's if you have a 3meg download package though. your upload could be better in my opinion, guessing you probably have a 312kbps or that's your advertised speed. what cable/dsl provider do you have 0 -

Your upload *must* be at least a 1:8 ratio, up to down, or you will have bandwidth you can't use (can't send enough acknowledge packets back saying you got it).
3mb down and 384k up is good, and of course everything will depend on how oversold your ISP is...
More upload wouldn't hurt, but you probably wouldn't need/notice it unless you are offering services up (web, etc.)0 -
Poor, poor, pitiful me...[:(!]

The speed test is a snap shot of when the measurement is taken and it depends on many "queertron" variables and which server. Try taking the speed test many times, you'll get different results.
These were taken in a row ...
7240/388
4992/390
3323/366
6642/348

You have to take the download speed tests with a grain of salt. I work installing dsl's and used to work in people's houses, and would have to explain this to people pretty regularly.
The download tests measure your speed to THAT PARTICULAR SITE. You will get different speeds depending on where the site is.
That said, i'd say your speed is plenty fast. What i think is more useful is asking yourself "does it work fast enough for the things i normally do?" If you are surfing the web, and using email even the slowest dsl is fine. Can you watch videos without them stuttering to complete the download? If yes, then i'd not worry about what the speed tests say compared to other people.0 -
