Synthetic gear lube...
I'm about to replace the oil in my axles, transmission, and transfer case - if it has one - in my 2002 Subaru GT wagon.
Anyone know anything about the synthetics??
What should I use, where??
I use synthetic in my cars' engines, but this id the first time I've considered then in the drive train.

I like the Amsoil products and you can find then on their website. Work great for the air cooled Harley engines.

The showroom stock boys all run Mobil 1 stuff, not just for the sponsor money - more horsepower gets to the ground = less fuel used, more Grunt available when you mash the loudpedal.
The real nice parts of using Mobil 1 is that it demulsifies nearly instantly - it just will not form an emulsion, without a lot of contamination. If you suspect water intrusion, let it sit for a little while, then just open the drain for an instant - instant clearing of any water.
Check with your Manufacturer first though - if your limited slip axles and transfer cases use friction plates, they may get slippy with Mobil 1.
One other caveat - if your car is EVER gonna leak, it will with the synthetics - they have a creeping/wetting ability beyond any conventional oil.0 -
I use only Amsoil synthetics for lubes and motor oil. Check out Amsoil.com for good information. If you decide you want to order some, I know a great dealer who will sell it at dealers cost. Put Lucas oils in it and be done with it.
I put all Lucas fluids in my Spec-Miata and beat the crap out of it. Changed it again later and the fluids were still clean, no metal, etc.0 -

Been useing AMSOIL for years. Its great stuff! (my Dad became a dealer in the early 80's)we've never had an issue i could relate to their products. It is big $$$ just you know, but i will allways run it. ATLESS I'm not keeping the car, truck or whatever very long, then there is my #2 choice. Mobil 1. it is a good product for a reasonable price. If you are not going to keep the item long enough for a return on your money, then I feel it is the one to go with. 0 -

I've got a 81 El Camino I bought in 1982.I gave it to my son a couple of years ago while he was in high school.I went over it and fixed any potential problems before he started driving it.It had always had a slight whine in the rear end since I bought it.Replaced the gear lube with Mobil 1,noise went away so I guess it works. 0 -

It can get REAL cold around here in the winter. One winter we had a couple weeks where it got down to -45 a few days. My 4x4 work truck would not move off the spot unless I shifted it into 4 wheel drive. ( The front wanted to skid rather than turn) I dropped the gear lube front and back and refilled it with Mobil 1 synthetic gear lube, end of problem. Dave 0
