Quadrajet Carburators

I have a 81 El Camino that I bought in 82 so it's sort of part of the family.It still has the original 305 but I am afraid the old Quadrajet is completely worn out.It is dripping fuel out the butterfly shaft.I need advice on if I should find a good Quadrajet or put on an after market carburator on.Since it is a 305 I am not looking for horsepower but it has to be dependable and a little better milage would be nice. Thanks

  Yep, with the tired old 440 it ran a best of 12.19-1/4 with a 1.595 60 ft. time. And yes I run a pair of slicks on the dragstrip. Dave

  Sir. This is a simple fix. The Q-jet was notorious for the float absorbing fuel. It very easy to replace the float. You don't have to remove the carburator form the intake.
  While the top is off check the powervalve for gum and sticking.

  Do you have to add weight to get it to hook up, even with the slicks? If you don't I think you will with the new motor. Can't tell by the pic, but I'm not seeing anything other than a stock type suspension under it. Does it have ladders or a 4-link to help in that department?

  JBW; No weight added, I was running just a pinion snubber but was still getting to much rear end rotation. I built a set of 'caltracks'. If you're not familiar with them they are a bar under the front segment mounted to a pivot point that loads the front spring segment. It prevents the housing from rotating upward and plants the tires. The other reason it hooks so well is it's high center of gravity. It transfers the weight to the rear on launchvery well but it's a double edged sword. The high center of gravity also makes it a handful to drive on the top end. Dave
