3 TV channels, didn't see a color TV until I was 15. No air conditioning, partyline telephone, no seatbelts, road in the back of a pickup standing up with no endgate. no bike helmets, heck no chain guard on the bike. Used to follow my Dad around while he mowed the grass and sprayed for mosquitoes with DDT, we liked to play in the white fog. No calculators, we used a pencil, walked to school even at -35. Drove everywhere at 12, had my own .22 even younger and knew how to use it. Everyone had a pocket knife at school and often a rifle or a shotgun out in the car in the lot. The teacher could and would give us a lickin' and we'd get one when we got home. We could hitch a ride with a stranger, of course we knew everyone in the area anyway. Dave

This is no lie. My mom never had a clothes dryer until about 1976. In summer-they hung outside. In winter or rainy days-they hung in the basement.

I remember gas at 26 cents a gallon. We would walk the power mower my brother bought for $15 to the gas station and a nickle would about overflow the tank.

They used to charge about $5 to charge a car battery because nobody owned a battery charger.

I remember picking up 6 pop bottles and taking them to John & Helen's store, buying a pop for the 12 cents I got for the deposit and then using the 2 cents return on the bottle and buying several pieces of candy or a box of licorice snaps.

I remember Hershey having both a 5 cent and 10 cent size candy bar. I remember Ivory soap having a big double bar of soap for 10 cents and they would cut it in half if you only had a nickle.

I remember stopping at the Ramona shoe maker on the way home from school and for a nickle or 15 cents or whatever my dad gave me-the guy would sew my ripped out shoes back together.

How about a hot waffle ice cream sandwich at the Kresge's store for a dime.

I could go on and on and I am not even 50 yet.

I can remember when I first started loving old cars - over half of them had holes in the front bumper - for the crank! Lemme see, "retard the spark, Juust crack the throttle, and hold the crank with your thumb here..."

Beer in cans needed a "churchkey"!

Old Men sitting on the front porch of the hardware store, "sittin' and whittlin" - if they liked you, they would give you a chain or a cage with a ball inside, or a whistle, carved out of one piece of wood!

Big barrels of pickles in the stores, with a clear plastic lid, and you used a set of tongs to pick your pickle, (big as your head!) and it was $.05!

A whole counter, twenty feet long, with glass jars full of "penny candy"

    Pack of gum = $.10

    Loaf of bread = $.12

Gas Wars when I was in High school would have two dealers on opposite ends of town, selling their gas for $.19/gal.

Village Blacksmithy! I could watch for hours!

Lone Ranger was in first run!

    Sky King! Wrestling!

$5.00 left on a particular stump would get a gallon jug of 100+ proof, in an hour or two!
