It hard to do the diplomacy thing with a government that does not care about it's own people much less the citizens of any other country.

Socialists, with a scared, firearm (and knife) hating elite.

They certainly wouldn't want to run any risks to save the Sailors. Just call the u.n. - they will diplomatically resolve the differences of opinion, here. Maybe the Men will be dead by then, but at least it will have been resolved, peaceably.

Where are Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, when we need them.

What a bunch of punks we both are (UK & USA). What little resolve we show.

No wonder we are always getting shoved around by a bunch of piss ant, efete, girliecountries.

The first priority should be, and is, the lives of the prisoners. Why not try to work it out before throwing their lives away? I wonder if the prisoners and their families, or other U.K. military personnel, think the British Government should try a diplomatic solution here? Is there another course of action to try first that anyone thinks would definitely get them released unharmed?

Start taking out strategic targets and the Iranians will start showing a sense of "self preservation".

It would also end the lives of the prisoners. I'm sure they're thankful that cooler heads are calling the shots.

There will be plenty of time to drop all the bombs you want. How about trying to get the sailors out alive first, then go after the other guy.

Iran is showing the world it can pull the tail of the British lion with impunity.
It used to be called brinkmanship.

They are not prisoners. They are hostages. Hostages of the same assbag who took sixty-six American hostages in 1979 and held most of them for four hundred forty-four days. Not an assbag just like that assbag, the same assbag.

In order to negotiate there has to be something to negotiate. How do you negotiate an act of war? The Iranians kidnapped these British sailors from an Indian ship in Iraqi waters while they were doing the business of the "coalition". If the Iranians are allowed to get away with this, and they will be, the message is you can pretty much do anything you damn well please. As bad as I hate to say it, there are more important principals involved here than the lives of six sailors. It looks to me like the Brits ain't the only ones who left their balls at home.

You don't get any do-overs in their line of work, but this should have never been allowed to develop in the first place. Assuming the news reports are anywhere near the truth, the Brits put a boarding party on an Indian ship in Iraqi waters to inspect the manifest and cargo. While they were in the process of doing this, an Iranian ship came alongside and kidnapped the British sailors.

The Brits should have ordered the Iranian ship to standoff, and failing to do so, should have sent her to the bottom.

Being in a boarding party is risky business under the best of circumstances. A boarding party without the backing of their ship is a near suicide mission.

Maybe my Navy would pull the same stunt, but if I honestly thought there were that possibility up front, I would not go to sea with them.

JamesRK onces again says an awful lot of truth!

I would have just said something ignorant like...

Hey Europe, Let me know who that's workin' for you.

    What would Israel do?

And another thing. Why isn't India raising hell?

Fence sitting cowards like the rest of Europe.
Iran's calling everyone's bluff. Iran needs to be warned about the safety of the captives and then blitzed; preferrably by Israel followed by a coalition invasion and occupation with a PLAN.
Funny how the Democrats who enabled deposition of the Shah Pahlevi and subsequent revolution wont take criticism for their misjudgement.
At the time, Iran was a necessary strong ally in a critical location during the cold war. The Dems screwed up U.S. interests badly in that debacle but the public's memory is short.

They took the whole damn ship, not part of the crew. Our government screwed the whole crew. The crew didn't screw a few of their shipmates.

just because 93% of brits side with the enemy and the terrorists doesn't make their position any more correct.

+1 on what James said, too.

I also think it's instructive that they chose to kidnap British sailors and not Americans. They almost certainly have had similar opportunities with American sailors but passed up on them if they did. Anyone else think it's a mighty big coincidence that just as the Brits are withdrawing from Iraq, Iran chooses to provoke them, but not America as we're surging our presence right next door?

The mullahs saw weakness, exploited it, looks like they gambled correctly (i.e. got the result they wanted: more appeasement) and now will be emboldened all the more.

I don't want to get too far afield of the subject, but to answer your question, the USS Pueblo incident was piracy on the high seas by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The United States reacted by knuckling under to the North Koreans. One of the most disgraceful low points in United States History.

If the United States had reacted as it should have, North Korea wouldn't be the problem it is today. As I recall, our reaction, or lack of reaction, made me angrier than anything else in my adult life.

Is that what you were getting at?

That's a bit of faulty logic if I ever heard it.

Why would Iran say, "They're leaving - let's give them a reason to stay!"?

Iran's hoping for a prisoner swap, plain and simple. The Brits were in the neighborhood and were nabbed. I don't think too many American units operate in the south around the Shatt-al Arab and chances are those idiots couldn't tell a Brit from an American anyway.

I think Iran said "They're leaving. Let's see how serious their resolve on the whole matter is." and now that they know the Brits aren't serious about it, as evidenced by their anemic response, we might start seeing a lot more adventurism by the mullahs and other assorted asshats. Your position is perfectly reasonable, but time will tell one way or the other.

Close all the pubs in the UK for just 10 minutes, have the telly stuck on BBC, and I bet they'll change their support [}:)].

...The Brits were not just a "target of opportunity", that's BS.

...The diaper heads targeted them (Brits) vs us because the Brits ROE is to "de-escalte" a situation...not to become confrontational.

...The Iranian Ali-Babbas knew the Brits would do NOTHING, so it was a pretty safe bet no bullets would fly.

...Shame they did not attempt to take our guys, the camel jockies would now be minus a few boats, ships, and toe-sucking Persians...with no hostages taken...[^]

....Bomb their only gasoline refinery, their port, take out their navy...institute a naval/air blockade...if that does not get their attention, kiddnap their camels wives...[;)]

The British can do as they please. It's their people and their problem. What I don't like is them telling us how to do things the europian way and the fools here who think it's the right way.[}:)]

I honestly think they said, "Look Hamid... Americans!"

    "Really? Where?"

    "There!"

"But the flag on their uniform looks different."

"It's red, white, and blue... what else do you want? Come on!"

    A few hours later.

"You eediots! These aren't Americans! They're British!"

    "Oh merde."
