AMMAN, Jordan - A Jordanian man fatally shot his 17-year-old daughter whom he suspected of having sex despite a medical exam that proved her chastity, an official said Thursday. The man surrendered to police hours after the killing, saying he had done it for family honor.

A state forensic pathologist, who works at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Amman where an autopsy was performed, said in a phone interview that the girl had run away from home several times for unknown reasons.
Weeks ago, the girl had returned home from a family protection clinic after doctors had vouched for her virginity and the father had signed a pledge not to harm her, the pathologist said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the case.
"The tests proved that she was a virgin," the pathologist said. The girl returned home only after her father signed a statement promising not to harm her, he added.
The father shot the girl four times in the head on Tuesday. On Wednesday, an autopsy was performed that again showed "she was still a virgin," the pathologist said.
Authorities have not disclosed the names of the father or the daughter or even their hometown, saying only that they lived in a southern province.
The crime is the first "honor killing" this year in Jordan, where many men consider sex out of wedlock to be an almost indelible stain on a family's reputation. On average, about 20 women in the country are killed by their relatives in such cases each year. Women have been killed for simply dating.
Global human rights organizations have condemned such killings and appealed to King Abdullah II to put an end to them.
In response, the government has abolished a section in the penal code that allowed for "honor" killers to get sentences as lenient as six months in prison. Instead, the government has told judges to consider honor killings on a par with other homicides, which in Jordan are punishable by up to 15 years in jail.
But attempts to introduce harsher sentences have been blocked by conservative lawmakers who argue that tougher penalties would lead to promiscuity.
Queen Rania also has called for harsher punishment for such killers.

Why are religious people so concerned with virginity?
Chinese proverb;
Virginity is like balloon, one pr/ick and all gone.[;)]
Never much cared for it myself. Too much crying, blood, and bother. Let some other sucker chop down the trees, I'll just enjoy the picnic later.
[:p]
Anyone that desires only virgins must have issues being compared to a better man.[}:)][:D]0 -
I think the issue might really be: "Is it OK to kill women". 0 -

I think the importance runs just as strong among non religious as well.0 -
but did they check her mouth? 0 -
There are some twisted and selfish people in this world. 0 -
Family honor killing... Why in the world did those dinosours chose to live and die in that part of the world?! This is what we are fighting and dying for folks. 0 -
yep, what a loving father[V]
Barbarians. And some on this forum call the Israelis monsters[:(!]0 -
the funny thing is that a doctor CANT tell if a women is a virgin or not...I can just imagine though that doctors never wanted to tell parents that because they enjoyed looking at their teenage daughters 0 -

Well, she may have been sucking some....
Not that he has a right to kill her, what happened to just disowning shamefull family members?!
"If thou shalt hear say ... Certain men ... saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known ... Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword."
"And the LORD spake unto Moses....And Moses said unto them, Have ye saved all the women alive? ... Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves"
"When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it ... And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword: But the women ... shalt thou take unto thyself"
Great kill an entire city if they practice a different religion.
Then kill everyone except the virgins, who you get to rape....
Christians are great if they don't follow the bible.
Muslims are great if they don't follow the Qu'ran.
The difference is that muslims aren't hypocrits, and do follow their holy book.
Either way Im sick of religion.0 -

I dont know why, but most cultures regardless of religion have always placed some importance on viginity. Young people today that arent religious still place an importance on virginity and I assume the reasons can range from health to symbolism to peer preceptions of promescuity.0 -

Well doctors are business men. If people knew that doctors couldnt make medical diagnosis of virginity then they would probably not use the services of a doctor to make the determination. Therefore, doctors dont tell parents that its medically impossible to determine virginity on a female.0 -
Well, theres a difference between proof and evidence.
The hymen can be broken in ways other than intercourse, I beleive this is one of the reasons for side saddle riding with european nobility, they placed a high value on virgin brides, and well, even vigourous horse back riding can tear the only evidence of it.
Thus a doctor can see "evidence" a womans virginity is gone when in fact it is not.
Likewise, a man of "small caliber" who is "gentle" may not tear it, and with modern science, there are surgerys to reconstruct it.
Doctors can say "Likely a Virgin", or "Not likely a Virgin".
They cant use "Absolutly"
One of the more peculiar tidbits of info I picked up in college, some girls keep their "virginity" by practicing even more disreputable acts.
Ie they do 69 and anal, but they dont do anything the "old fashioned" way, that they save for marriage... WTH, i mean, most girls wont go for the latter act, those..... "dirty" girls (I wish there were no autocensor) have to be the biggest hypocrits ever... calling themselves virgins... whatever.
but yea back to the topic, no reason to murder for loosing virginity, and the only reason to place a high emphasis on it, was cause back then there were no paternity tests, that way you know the kid is actually yours0 -
The father knew she wasn't a virgin anymore because he got her pregnant.
He killed her before she could tell who the father was. Ya just never know.0 -

The six month sentence has been abolished, but judges don't want to give harsher sentences. Sounds like murder of your daughter today in Jordan brings about a seven month sentence.
These guys have not progressed past the 7th century AD.0 -

I was thinking the same thing.
Obviously there is more to this story, though. My guess is that the daughter was a s/kanky s/lut and was sleeping around with everyone, including the local mullahs. Then, the daughter tried to have sex with her father. Her father, being a good Muslim, declined, and then she tried to forceably rape him, and that's when he had no choice but to protect himself and he shot her in self defense.0 -

You guys are looking at the wrong damned thing. It's got nothing to do with his religion and everything to do that he's a tribal Arab $#!thead.
And I only say that because I've met a few Muslims that are okay, but have never run across an Arab I could stand.0 -

unless it's a promise or pledge to be an ass or a terrorist.[:D]0 -
"But your comments are hateful. Find something besides your prejudices to discuss".
I am not discussing my prejudices. I am discussing the prejucidices of the Muslims.
It is not hateful to say that they have not advanced past the 7th century. It is an accurate assessment.0 -
The question still is, "is it OK to kill women?. 0 -

Then you need to run across a few more Arabs. They are just like everyone else if you can get them away from the pack.
There's a Saud that comes into the shop. He chews tobacco, drinks beer, and has an American flag tattooed on his arm. He would be killed if he let anyone in Arabia see the tattoo. He has dual citizenship and spends about 4 months out of the year in Arabia running his import/export business.
He come in one day bit/chin' that "Everyone looks at me like I'm a tourist"! I said "You are a tourist".
He said "No, a TOURIST!, like with a bomb or something" When I figured out he was trying to say terrorist I about rolled on the floor!0 -
