Choose your battery of 3 rifles
A thought came to mind last night when I should have been sleeping. If you could choose three (and only three - God forbid) rifles for your hunting and shooting needs currently and into the future and all three had to based upon the same parent cartridge, what would you choose? I will except true varmit rifles and those that may be needed for large, hairy man-eating, fire-breathing, dangerous critters of any type. Thus, my thoughts really address sport shooting, hunting of antlered and most horned game animals, etc.
The parent cartridges and offspring that came to my mind are:
Parent - 30-30
Offspring 25-35, 7-30 Waters and 32 Spl
Parent - 7x57
Offspring 6mm Rem, 257 Roberts, 8x57
Parent - 308
Offspring 243, 260, 7-08, 338 Federal, 358 Win
Parent - 30-06
Offspring 25-06, 270, 280, 35 Whelen
Parent - 300 Win Mag
Offspring - 264 Win Mag, 7 Rem Mag, 338 Win Mag
Parent - 300 Weatherby
Offspring - Wthrby -- 257, 7mm, 338, 378
Some of you will think of others. If you would like to play, pick a parent cartridge and identify the three that would best satisfy your needs.

I will start.
I choose the parent 308. My three would be 260, 308 and 338 Federal.0 -
I too would go with 308:
7-08, 308 and 338.0 -
308
223
17hmr0 -
260, 308 & 358 RJSnow 0 -
changing mine to .308 also cause thats what i shoot most. .243 +.338 federal to supplement
I still like the wsms, or how bout the dakotas or jarret rifles for the more serious big game hunters.0 -
Yep, 308 based. Will take the 243, 308, 358 Winchester. 0 -
.300 Weatherby.
D.0 -
Another vote for 308, but 243 or 338 or 358 dont' do much for me. How about 45 Win Mag (its a 308 case cut down) and some sort of wildcat based on a 45win mag necked down to 22? 0 -
I would take the 30/06 and be able to shoot a range in grain bullets from 55g to 320g 0 -
whatever YOU choose...ill choose 1 BIGGER! [}:)] 0 -
You KNOW I am have to pick 300 Win Mag. [:D] I could care less about the offspring. 0 -
.257 Weatherby (if necessary) will take care of anything on this continent with the proper bullet and a decent shot placement. That's part of the reason I bought one.[8D] 0 -
-Yo wtroper--You need drugs--
--Good luck--JIMBO0 -
Not to pick nits, but, the .300 win mag is the parent of nothing.
All of the cartridges listed as "offspring" were in production before the .300 winnie was even introduced.
All of those were the offspring of the .375/.300 H&H case, as were the Weatherby cartridges.
So, I'll choose the .375 H&H, 7MM Rem mag and .257 Weatherby as my 3 rifle battery.0 -
Stanman -- yes, I give in to you. You are correct.
Jimbowby - Yup, no doubt about it. [:)][:)]
Thanks to all who read or posted here. I was interested in your thoughts. Very good.
Now I am going to start another thread with a slightly different theme.0 -
308
243 - 7mm-08 - 7mmBR0 -
30-06 25-06 280 0 -
Would only need one rifle to fight the enemies of freedom who would impose such restrictions on me.[8D] 0 -
.30-06 parent:
.270 OR .25-06
.30-06
.35 Whelen OR .338-060
