Last night was a long one...first RA weekend
Wow, it was quite the weekend for me. Last night I got to sleep finally about 4am, I was escorting loud, drunk kids to their rooms. I only wrote one up and that was because he was warned more than once to go to his room. He refused and pulled out some brass knuckles. Fortunately, his brother was there and calmed him down some and his brother took him into his room. So I ended up writing him up and slipping it under his door; sure beats having to give it to him with his brass knuckles on. [;)]
But all in all, it wasn't as bad as I had expected. It just saddens me that these kids choose to put them selves through all of the stuff they do. One kid was sitting in the bathroom in front of a urinal when I checked the bathroom at about 1:45am. I asked him if he was alright and he picked his head up off the urinal and said he was simply waiting to throw up. That was probably the saddest thing I've ever seen in my life.
Maybe you guys can help me grasp something. Why do kids to that? Why do they drink themselves into oblivion, throw up, pass out, wake up, throw up again, and go through a nasty hangover weekend after weekend? I simply don't understand why they put themselves through that. Anyway, one weekend down, about 12 left.

P.S.-you might find my favorite quote interesting posted elsewhere with that subject, i.e., "If by WHISKEY..."
P.S.S.-here's the deal. It's not the alcohol. People who get behind the wheel after they're plastered and kill somebody are to alcohol what hackers are to computers. You ad negative human nature to a neat thing and they screw it up. Alcoholics will say with bravado-"Hell, I'M JUST GETTIN' STARTED with a 12 pack or (fill in the blank)". But, they're amateurs.
As a parent and a mental health professional of 35 years-and I'm speaking in generalities from here on so don't get defensive-most well adjusted people drink. The majority of societies use alcohol to make and seal deals, i.e., network, as on the golf course or to
celebrate births, weddings, toast treaties.
A parent has the responsibility to teach children to swim, to dance (BALLROOM-networking still done here as well, but at least so they can do a passable job at their own damned wedding). To drive (we taught our 3 girls sans Driver's Ed.). To use a firearm. And, to drink responsibly.
The problem as I see it with todays youth is in part with role models. Kids now days, since the "Animal House" movie, want to slam shots and go nuts. When I was in my teens, twenties there was "the
Rat Pack(Sinatra, Martin, etc.), a totally different Hollywood, and the WWII generation to look up to. You wanted to grow up. You wanted that class, glamour. You didn't want to be an amateur. You wanted to
have the euphoria but be discrete. You wanted to show off your date,
impress her, treat her right.
Alcohol is meant to be an adjunct to life. You're to drink to live, not live to drink. I've been a minority in that I smoked socially for years after smoking daily. For years I'd go out, buy a pack, smoke 4-8 (and yes inhale), leave the pack on the table and go home, not to do it again until I went out, had an aniversary, had a 4th of July party, etc. It's about self discipline. The Native Americans smoked tobacco that way. Then along comes settlers who did/do it all day, every day.
Not drinking takes away opportunity and education and eliminates one from important circles. You literally could make an elective subject last a whole semester limited to wines, or to whiskeys, or beers.
When it comes to Christianity-I've heard all the arguments against drinking-but if it was good enough for The Lord, it's good enough for me. If people would drink like He did, there'd be no problem. You can O.D. and have a psychiatric meltdown with religion just as with food, alcohol, street drugs. It's interesting that only the more obscure Christian churches have a problem with Psychiatry.
Membership in these invariably has a negative common denominator threaded through it. But, that, as they say, is a whole 'nuther book.
