Star Wars Mausers
Why do the Han and Luke carry broomhandle Mausers? Was this model ever avalible to the general public, or was it only sold to rebels fighting against the Galactic Empire?

The broomhandle mauser version blasters were save for the republics best soldiers and officers because they were in low supply of such high quality blasters.
The common soldier However, Would be seen carrying either the P-38 or the luger style blasters because they were in good supply and the Jawas good build them cheaper.

Han Solo's pistol was a customized Mauser C96, while the stormtroopers carried customized Sterling submachine guns or the World War II-era German MG34 general purpose machine gun, most easily seen in the detention center break-in in Episode IV. And the heavy blaster was a Lewisgun 0 -

I'll bet Lucas wanted prop guns which were somewhat easy to acquire in England (where most of the filming was done) and yet could be "dressed up" so that ordinary viewers would not recognize them.
There was a real good reason for dressing up real firearms: they used blank rounds to trigger character reactions and to have placeholders so the SFX guys could put in the laser beams and blast sounds.
FYI: sometimes the SFX guys screwed up and you'd just hear a bang instead of "blaster" fire. Listen closely the next time you watch Star Wars.0 -

BTW, Boba Fett's carbine seems to be a some type of Colt SAA/clone with a stock added...the Jawas' rifles were a chopped down Enfields...

the light sabers they used in the movie had mostly parts off a faucet. there's a website somewhere that shows you exactly what parts and mods to make an exact replica of the prop.
probably another website for the prop blasters too.0 -
The pulse rifles on ALIENS was a customised Thompson too 0 -
