Marriage between cousins, while outlawed in the First and Second world is still practiced today in primitive corners of Third world backwaters like Alabama, New York and Texas.

In the Ozarks, near where I grew up, no one would marry a girl whose father and brothers would not touch her. Did not realize it was that close to Texas...

I had someone try to fix me up with one of my cousins at a family funeral before...talk about strange. Funny thing is it was her grandmother doing the talking. She said it was ok, "we're kissin cousins".

It was pretty common in close-knit ethnic communities to marry family members, even a generation ago.

And recent publications suggest that cousin-marriage is not all that dangerous in terms of the genetic consequences.

Still, I hope Giuliani doesn't make it to the White House.

Depends on the state. As He Dog suggests (I can't vouch for the states he names but the point is there) in some states, cousin marriage is not forbidden.

the general pattern is marriage between 1st cousins or closer is prohibited, but some states go to 2nd cousins or even beyond.

I grew up in an area where inbreeding was a common occurence (even rampant, some might say.) trust me, there are consequences, especially once you get 3 and 4 generations into it.
