It ain't the bred, it's how they are raised/trained.

I own an American Bulldog who doesn't have a mean bone in him. I've seen lap dogs that were mean and agressive, mostly depends on how their owners treat/train/raise them.

Wake up folks - it's in the genes - it's nature, not just nurture. This bread should be extinct and soon. Just how many attacks does it take? Ever hear of a Lab killing anyone? or a golden retriever? WAKE UP!

"She's never done this before," Palmer said. "I've never had any problem.

No, it isn't the breed, hunh?

I don't know which it is, but I see WAY too many accounts of pit bull dogs that were previously docile, friendly, cherished family pets, but one day something "snapped" and the dogs hurt or killed someone.

You couldn't run fast enough to give me one.

A lot of the people that I have seen who have pit bulls seem to have something to prove. To show there manliness in a way they are not capable otherwise. I had one wandering around in my back yard awhile back and everytime I opened the door, it would growl and snarl. I live in the city limits where it is illegal to discharge a firearm, except in self defense. I called animal control and they wouldn't come out, too busy, So I got my air rifle and shot it in the butt, it left. Too menacing a breed for me!

Another bad breed is a Shar-pa (spelling?)...those Chinese fighting dogs. One of my uncles had one, and it bit over 11 people, including multiple children, and my dad (uncle's brother), before he had it put down.

My old neighbor also had one that tried biting us every time we walked past it. It was given to them without their consent, and neither of them wanted it. When it was inside, they had it chained to the wall in the kitchen because it was so violent...they didn't want it running around the rest of the house. Dad "disappeared" that dog with his .38.

Some of you folks crack me up.Why not put the blame on the backyard breeders and the punk thugs that think its cool to get a dog that was bred to be tough and make it aggressive through neglect,or the people who have no right to own any kind of animal because they are too stupid.Like the old saying,"A dog is only as smart as its master."If I wanted,I could raise a poodle to chew on the neighborhood kids. The only reason why pitbulls are at the top of the list on human attacks is their popularity with young kids who watch too much MTV and want to emulate their gangbangin thug idols.
All of this nonsense coming from a group of people who defend gun rights and bitch about the people who want to ban them.Of course guns dont kill people, people kill people....right?.

Under normal circumstances, I would agree with you. But how many killer daschounds do you see running around attacking people at random? It's the genetics, not the upbringing that determin how a dog will act. It's instinct for them.

I own an American Bulldog who doesn't have a mean bone in him. I've seen lap dogs that were mean and agressive, mostly depends on how their owners treat/train/raise them.Agreed.

A dog of any breed that's raised in a highly abusive atmosphere and receives intensive aggression training will become a monster, even a poodle. It's just that APBT's are large, strong, capable of inflicting serious damage and have one of the strongest drives of any breed.

The primary genetic issue at work here is a complete and total dedication to their mission, which is actually a highly desirable trait. If raised from a pup as a companion dog this unbelievable sense of dedication to their training will be just as evident. When raised with kids you couldn't get them to bite one with a cattle prod. For this reason they're capable of being one of the most gentle, mothering and devoted family dogs out there, but if raised to be an aggressive biter they'll be just as devoted to this.

The problem is that if they're raised for high aggression there's no way you're going to going to get them out of this mindset. It's their mission and nothing will stand in their way. Sad to say, but the only cure for this is to put them down.

Pit Bulls have been around for a very long time, but many fail to notice they only gained the reputation as crazoid man-killers over the last 15 years or so. It's the culture of many APBT owners that's chenged, not the genetics of the dogs.

While I would never own one I do think much of this big ta-do about pitts is bull...they are just the newest target because they are popular right now,,,I can remember when there was the same hysteria about Dobermans,,,there were even several movies about "the killer Dobermans",,or "they only kill their masters",,,before that it was German Shepards,,,and yes if you do a search you can find where a Lab killed a person before,"yes I searched before I posted this",,these dogs are mean and powerfull but so are many other breeds of large dogs,,the most vicious breed of dog I have ever been around was Dalmatians,,I have a good friend that is a breeder,,almost all of them will bite and everybody loves that spotted dog just their bite is not as powerful as a pit bull

We hear from the pit lovers all the time that its not the breed but rather how one raises the animal. Well then, how could this incident be explained? It was, after all, the family dog.

Teen needs 900 stitches after dog attack

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- (AP) -- A teenager who needed 900 stitches after her family's pit bull attacked her is recovering at home.

Amanda Boyles, 19, of Interlachen, suffered facial lacerations and a damaged artery that required surgery after the dog lunged at her face while they were playing Thursday.

Deputies said the woman's father, Felton Boyles, pried the dog off his daughter at it shook her head back and forth in its grip.

Putnam Sheriff's Capt. Steve Rose said he was told the young woman needed as many as three layers of stitches in places where the lacerations were deep. According to the incident report, Felton Boyles said his daughter had injuries to both sides of her face near her mouth and chin.

The 2-year-old white pit bull, named Boss Hog, was euthanized Friday and sent to the health department to be tested for possible rabies, Rose said.

Some people talk seriously about rounding up all those dangerous pit bulls and destroying them.

Not to be paranoid but an event like that is what I am referring to.

Having been interviewed by animal psychologists and pet psychics, every single one of the poor pit bulls (aka radical, fundamentalist canine Americans) listed above reported their reasons for their savage attacks on humans: being traumatized by kittens!!!

For the record, I'm not defending all Pit Bulls. I'd never have one I hadn't raised from a pup.

I'd bet a million $$ there are more people attacked by chihuahuas and yorkies than pit bulls. everybody that goes around to houses as part of their job (cable tv installer, mailman, painter, plumber, etc) they all know "it's the little dogs that get ya" I've heard that time after time.

dudes, I swear if you bred chihuahuas that are the same size as a pit bull, people would forget all about pit bulls because they'd be terrified of the chihuahuas.

Thats the truth. Dachshund are the meanest little poop dogs I can think of hands down. I'm not fond of pit bulls in the least and there has been to much back yard breeding and I think that is the reason why they snap.

And there are STATISTICS that say otherwise.

Sure, lots of folks have been "nipped" by chihuahuas and yorkies, but how many of those require a trip to the emerency room, hospitalization and reconstructive surgery? I'd be willing to bet that pile of $$$ that there aren't many gravesites of victims put there by chihuahua or yorkie attacks. [:p] (Note the top entries in each column of the graphic below. You don't even see yorkies on the list.)

And if you bred WASPS or FIREANTS the size of pit bulls, who would want to go outside? [;)]

The best dog I ever had was a pit bull I raised from 6 weeks old.

He was neutered as soon as we could and was an indoor dog.

Right after he turned 2, he tried to eat the horses, also my other dogs.

    He was given to someone.

I had never believed that it was a genetic trait. Now I do.

By the way, pit bulls were bred to fight each other to the death in merry olde England - in pits in the ground.
