Hi,

Fairly new to gun collecting and I seem to like NIB pre bans. My question is... Is is better to leave the gun in the original packaging or to remove it from the packaging and properly clean and lubricate the parts. It seems to me that leaving them in the original bags would quicken the deterioration and rusting of the firearms. Input please. Also What is your reccomendations on cleaning wood furniture elements of old rifles.

    Just wanted to get everyones take on the term NIB. I have just recieved another gun today that was advertised as NIB in perfect condition upon close examination after recieving it the gun was certainly not new in the box and shows signs of many disassemblies as well as dirt within the gun. Lightly running my finger inside the reciever I pick up a nice carbon coating. This is at least the third gun I have purchased in this condition as being advertised as NIB. It appals me that the guns were not even properly cleaned before shipping. Am I just being anal? If I Purchase something at a premium for being NIB I expect it to be just that. I can handle minor handling marks but for a gun to be shipped to a customer and not even cleaned. What would you rank a seller that did this to you?

    If I would sell something NIB, it would be sold with the grease coating still on the gun. If I purchase something NIB, it better be NIB, or I would send back and leave negative.

    I don't think you're being annal. When you buy New In Box, it should mean just that. If not, then it's used.

    My only comment - I have noticed that several brand new guns I bought had been factory tested and had some residue in the receiver/chamber. The two H&K's I bought in the 1980's sent the spent shells and the target in the box with an explaination that it was factory tested.

    I have no problem with factory tested with the documented targets I have a few of those with the casings as well. Dirt debris and firing indicators is definately not factory fired. I may be a little new to collecting but certainly not stupid. Not critisizing your comment Your point is well made and understood. This is a stainless tec9 $500.00. I will probably just keep it and leave a negative. Not worth the hassle and FFL and shipping charges. I had the same problem with an AK I bought. The thing that kills me is that there was no attempt to even clean the gun. It's a shame that people can't even keep up the maintenance on their guns.

    If you need a dental tool and Q-tips to clean it, then it is not NIB. I would send it back if not satisfied !

    This is exactly why I only buy from local sellers. This way I can inspect the item before paying for it. Sometimes buyers and sellers do not agree on the condition of the gun.

    I always double check the seller and ask questions.. Last gun I just bought has not been fired.

    Remember, a good thing to keep in mind...Before a gun leaves the factory it has to have at least one round put thru it...a proof round. O am sure the barrel might get swabbed, but the action dissassembled...probably not. I have one of S&W's first 629's that I bought NIB. It had a carbon ring around the front of the cylinder on every other chamber where it was test fired.

    However, if you can see tell tale signs like a primer ring on the bolt face, unburnt powder flakes, or carbon build up, then is the time to be Anal.

    I saw one of the CZ82 9X18 mak pistols at a gun show recently marked "New Gun". It had the standard fingernail sized chips in the finish, beat up grip panels, scars and blemishes. Probably had many thousands of rounds down the pipe. When I asked why it was marked "New" the Einstein behind the counter says "If it's marked new, it must be...they don't lie" Glad he cleared that up.

    NIB should mean never fired, never cleaned, never dismantled, all original parts in the original box. May mean other stuff (mags, cleaning rods, etc.) missing.

    ANIB should mean the gun has been fired, cleaned, taken down, but is all but perfect.IMHO

    That is why I don't buy guns at ATP gun shop anymore they advertise guns as new that have sat in the counter for god only knows how long and been "tested" by god only knows how many people. I bought several "new" guns and was told the obvious firing residue was "test fired" at factory only. Hmmm them there factory boys do some serious shootin :)

    I bought my Kimber at Sportsmans Warehouse brand new, as was previously posted it had been fired at the factory and there was definately powder residue in the barrel and inner workings of the piece, I cleaned it up and couldn't be happier with it, (unless I shot better) [:D]

    I only have a problem with sellers listing NIB guns and they are NOT DEALERS....you can only truly have a NEW gun with the guarantee of it being NEW if you buy it from a dealer.....never from an individual. Its the same with cars....they are NEVER new if parked with a "for sale" sign in someone's yard. Not even if they have it TOWED directly from the dealer's lot.

    You cannot complain if you bought it from a guy and not a dealer.

    When I bought my Kahr PM9, I ordered it from my local gun store who ordered it directly from the factory's distributor so that I was sure I'd get a new "virgin" one, i.e. not racked over, mag dropped and slapped in, and then dry-fired a thousand times or more.

    Picked it up and all was fine. Nylon security strap was on it. Got it home to do the obligatory strip and lube and to my shock found a very, very dirty gun. Loads of polymer flash, some metal particles and lots of dirt, perhaps even carbon. Two hours later, I was satisfied that the gun was cleaned and lubed properly. Truthfully, I was appalled at the whole episode.

    Based upon what other Kahr owners have posted here on GB and on other boards, this is pretty much the norm with Kahrs. So, IMO, it's not very impressive when a gun, made in the U.S.A. and costing a boodle of bucks looks as if it was the stepchild of a Third World factory.

    The first thing I do when I get any firearm home is clean it properly either to my suiting or to factory suggestions....
    And unless you are buying the gun for a resale only, that is what I advise you to do as well... And if you expect the factory to clean it after testing you won't get my vote because what you are asking is basically another 25/50 klickies tacked to the price tag.....Labor ain't free!!!

    NIB should mean unfired. What you described is obviously more than test firing a couple rounds. I am about to list on that I know to be unfired, but I have cleaned it. It will be listed as 'used but unfired'. Ask the questions before you bid.

    An example (and I think LF even mentioned it once) of NIB guns that come in dirty, with powder residue and cylinder rings are S&W pistols. Some have looked so bad, I've felt obligated to wipe them off with a dry polishing cloth before giving to the customer. They definately shoot more than one.
