latest news reports from BBC quote somali officials as saying the AQ elements were among ICU forces sheltering in Raskamboney (near the Kenyan border), after having fled first from Mogadishu and then from Kismayu. they were with ICU forces who had been holed up while fighting the Ethiopians for the last several days. the air strike was from an AC-130. further reports of a similar airstrike on a seperate village, Ahmaddo, about 150-250 mi. north. civilian casualties were included.
sporadic, nonverifiable reports of other possible airstrikes. there could be more or it could be confusion.
(later comment from US officials was, more like, "we got them right as they were fleeing from Mogadishu". riiiight, and they weren't holed up fighting the Ethiopians for the last 3 days either, they just ran back towards Mogadishu so we could blast them to peices and relocate their bloody corpses to the border of Kenya for disposal, right?)
the Somali officials said that the US actions had the full support of the Somali govt, in fact they had requested US forces to get them before they got out of Somalia. (this is not surprising, lots of ppl don't like AQ, including africans and arabs, ICU doesn't necessarily = AQ)
Somalian villagers, in the south of Somalia near Raskamboney (near the Kenyan border) say lots and lots of corpses strewn everywhere. no numbers, since it's not a military or governmental observation. just total carnage.
then a US official was interviewed, he said an announcement was made, something about the 5th fleet, "due to rapidly developing situations..." ships deployed there are the Dwight D Eisenhower, Bunker Hill, Ashland, and Angio. they are tasked to naval support off the Somalian coast. it was specualted that since one of these ships is an AC, there may be more airstrikes forthcoming.
what it looks like to me is, a significant concentration of targets has been identified and they are about to be eliminated. hence the redeployment of the battle group.0 -

I got up this morning and the reporter on this news story , in his best condescending negative voice said there were bodies everywhere but it wasn't clear if they achieve their target of the al Qaeda leaders.
