TV or an ATV???
We spend entirely too much time watching TV in the evenings...time that could be better spent as family time. My daughter is growing up (pre-teen) and I've noticed that she's spending more time alone in her room, etc...probably b/c we are not doing things together as a family (ie: games, etc).
My wife and I are considering terminating our satellite TV service and using that money, plus a few extra bucks a month to buy an ATV. By cutting the TV, we will force ourselves to spend more time together and the ATV will also lead to more quality family time. My daughter has a Honda XR-80 that she has not been able to ride since we moved to Idaho (we live in town now). If I buy a 4 wheeler to ride with her, we can spend some time riding forrest roads, etc. We will also be able to spend more time outdoors enjoying these beautiful mountains. The forrest roads are wreaking havoc on my truck and I'd be more inclined to take off up into the forrest if I had an ATV.
The down side to all this is that we have some TV shows that we really like to watch, and the fact that it's going to cost us an extra $50-$80 a month for the ATV payment. We can swing the payment provided my business stays the same and my income does not drop. I hate buying stuff on credit (another downside), but we already waste at least half of this much money every month on TV...
So, what do you folks think?...figured I'd toss this up and see what my extended GB/MC family thinks...[^]

ATV's are awsome fun. I have put several thousand miles on mine. If I remember right you are not too far from me. I am always up for a good ride.
If I remember right you do some Hydro seeding. I bet some of those customers need snow plowing done. You can get a nice plow set up for your ATV and make a few bucks that way too.0 -
Do it. Maybe you don't even need the ATV. But if you think you do, it's probably worth a little debt to keep a family together.
Oh, and you'll get over missing those TV shows you like pretty quickly. Even the good ones aren't worth much.0 -

If I lived in the part of the country you live in Eric. I'd had an ATV already. What better way to enjoy one of the most beautiful landscapes in the country.
But have you thought about a used ATV. Might be able to get a better deal0 -
ATV by all means. My wife and I just got them 2 months ago and we can't wait for the weekends to get here so we can ride. Been married for 41 years and it's just one more thing we like to do together. Like Idaho, the scenery in our part of Arizona ain't bad either.

How about canning the TV, and saving that money, plus the extra $80 or so for a year THEN buying the ATV with what you have saved? Should have about $1500 or so then. Not a bad down payment on an ATV. 0 -
I just bought a new tv, but I would take my 4 wheeler over it anyday. As a matter of fact about 15 of my family members including me and my girlfriend go on family trail rides quite often. Sometimes putting on as many as 100 miles in a day. We all enjoy it and we stop at scenic locations and resturants or bars to grab a bite to eat as well. Besides the fun aspect, they are very useful for other things like work, etc.

...already did that Danny. Cassidy is all for the idea. She has not been able to ride her dirt bike since moving here and this would give the opportunity to do so. She also likes the idea of more family time playing games, etc. The "no TV" will take some adjusting to get used to, but will probably benefit us all in the long run.
I hate having that monthly bill, but we are spending at least half of that on TV now and we should get a ton of use out of the ATV.0 -
We stopped watching TV for lent and after the first few days of kind of missing it, now we don't miss it at all!
I like the ATV idea in place of it though! I will probably get my ATV when I retire in a couple years and move back to Canada. Only problem is that the dear wife is not really into the ATV thing. But I think the TV thing is on the way out chez nous!0 -

You can sell an atv, hard to sell a cable subscription.
Been riding atvs for close to 30yrs. Wife, daughter and me ride nearly everyday and get together with other friends once a month for a big group ride. I wouldn't trade that quality time for anything. My wife got so into it I just recently had to buy her her own. My daughter is still a couple years away from having her own yet but she's already starting to ride her cousins little 90cc by herself (she'll be 4 in Jan.). They're a lot of fun and definately better than anything on the boob tube.
