A Tama man was injured when hunting dogs stepped on his gun.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say 37-year-old James Harris was pheasant hunting with a group about three miles north of Grinnell when the accident happened.
Officials say the group had shot a bird and when Harris went to retrieve it, he put his gun on the ground and crossed a fence. As he crossed the fence, hunting dogs stepped on his gun causing it to fire.
Harris was shot in the lower left leg.
He was treated at Grinnell Medical Center and later transferred by helicopter to University Hospitals in Iowa City.
The investigation is continuing.

My uncle Kenny was a very bad shot. He missed so many phesant one day that his dog came up and bit him. It's a good thing Kenny kept the gun away from his dog.[;)] 0 -

I teach hunter's Education here in NY State, and it is stressed over & over in all Hunter's Ed classes, that you must unload the firearm prior to engaging and obstacle like a fence, creek, stone wall, or cliff. All too often when you examine accidents such as these it is sportsmen this guys age or older who are having the accidents, not the youth who the education classes are aimed at. It is the older folks like us who feel that we know everything, and can't be taught anything. This guy learned the hard way.

I think my old bird dog wanted to shoot me a few times when I missed.
He would give me that .Why you stupid go to you know where look. I would just throw my hands up and say sorry. Buddy. I could just imagine him trotting off mumbling. I run my tail off out finding birds and this Bozo can't hit a barn. He really would get this disgusted look when I didn't knock down something for him to fetch.0
