Harrington and Richardson parts
Hey guys,
I know that this is more appropriate in the want ads but I think that this section gets a lot more traffic so please excuse, plus I have some questions. I recently took my great grandfathers Harrington and Richardson 32 cal 5 shot top break revolver (with hammer) to a gunsmith to be restored. He called me today and stated that he needs me to track down a hand and a hand spring. First of all am I out of line thinking that he may be able to find these parts better than me? Second, I am having a hard time tracking down what model this may be, especially with no serial number so any H$R gurus may have insight as to what mosel this may be by desription. Third, if anyone has a parts gun or a hand and hand spring I would be very interested in purchasing. Is there any other name that the hand or hand spring might go by?

brian. Your "gunsmith" sounds like a parts replacer. Suggest you look around for a gunsmith that has the knowledge and ability to make the parts if necessary. They may not find it cost worthy to do and tell you so. But the ability is invalueable. A good "smith" can take a hacksaw and a couple of files and make any part although the ones that you find today will have a fully equipped machine shop.
I had a problem with an old "owl head" topbreak a couple of years back (where the cylinder only turns occasionaly?) Was told that the pawl,hand and the flat spring above the trigger (trigger spring?) were problems with these guns. At the time someone (Brownells maybe?) had the flat spring stock.

That caliber is probably .32 S&W "short" but I'm no expert.

Thats kind of how I felt after I received the phone call today, and I wasnt sure if I was out of line thinking that I was dropping this off to have a service provided. I mean if I drop a car off for an oil change I dont supply them with the oil.........if that comparison makes sense. I might have to go pick this gun up and find somebody a little more professional. 0 -

I don't know what to tell ya with you being in IL. but I found this "old timer" gunsmith in IN. close to where I live. I have an old Iver Johnson .32 that was my Great-great grandpa's that was broke and I knew nothing about it. Not even who made it. I took it to him and he identified AND had parts to fix it. e-mail me and I can get his number for you if you don't have any luck. 0 -

You'd be better off if you could post what writing and pat. dates that are on the gun over on the expert side to be sure it's the large frame top break, like I've posted, instead of the small frame top break. According to the parts the old and new large frame topbreak uses the same hand assembly.

There is no serial number on the gun, I just spoke with the gunsmith ([:(!]) and he read off the script on the top of the barrel. The script is as follows:
Harrington and Richardson Arms Co. Wooster Mass
October 4, 1887, May 14, August 6 1889 April 2.95 April 7 1896
I asked him if there was a serial number under the plastic grips and he said no.0 -

Post this info, with your pic, over on the "Ask the Experts" side. There's a couple fellows over there that are TRUE experts on these pistols (bgoforth). Ask if it is the new or old large frame top break or is it the new or old small frame top break. If it's the large you are in business with the parts I posted.
