People are crazy if they don't wear ear protection. Sure wish I had been an "ice cream" and wore ear protection when the Ruger 41 Magnum first came out, perhaps I could enjoy music today with a little more clarity!

I'm not st000000pid, of course I wear hearing protection.
Once you damage enough "hair cells" your hearing is diminished or gone for good. While "hair cells" regenerate somewhat, it is not fast enough to compensate for the damage associated with the modern life (loud amplified music, power tools, noisy vehicles, etc.) and certainly can't compensate for damage from repeated firearm use without protection.

I did'nt use to wear ear protection. But I do now. Some guns bother you more than others. My 30-06 is loud but not painful to shoot without protection. The 204 on the other hand is the loudest gun I have ever owned. The first time I shot it I forgot to put the muffs on. Last time I did that....

Yes and more so these days.
My family wants me to do something about my hearing. It bothers other more than it does me.
I attribute it to exposure to a lot of automatic weapons fire, artillery fire, 90mm HV tank fire and a few very close explosions.
    I hear a constant hiss.

hell yes, I wear them when shooting, lawn mowers, weed eaters, chain saws. I want my ears to later a long time.
My cousin lost his hearing, he wears hearing aids, but he has that damn ringing in his ears, he said its all most as bad as his hearing loss

    I use standard foam earplugs.

    I don't like muffs.

    But when I shoot my .22LR - I don't need any protection.
I've got it silenced with an unregistered homemade silencer.

    Find new friends.

If they are as stupid and macho about muzzle/gun safety as they are about protecting their hearing, your very existence is in jeopardy.

Best advice yet. ALWAYS wear protection, hearing AND eyes.

I don't understand why someone would ridicule someone else for wearing safety gear?

You may still be ice cream, but at least you can hear.[:D]

Your freinds will see or "hear" the errors of their ways soon.

Yes, I wear my hearing protection when using my chain saw and when I am shooting anything. I consider it very smart, and I don't care what anyone else thinks about it.

I like my NRA hearing protection for just about anything ... some pistols are too loud for them.

    Religiously.
I wear hearing protection No matter what I'm shooting.
I use it to filter the high-pitched whine of power tools.
I use it when I'm blowing leaves.
    I'm wearing it right now.

And, of course, I always wear it when the wife is feeling frisky, if you know what I mean.

Your friends are idiots (no offense). They think hearing loss only means you can't hear as well.

What they don't realize (perhaps you should enlighten them) is that they will also have tinnitus, which is a constant ringing/buzzing sound that never goes away and can be so irritating that it keeps you awake at night.

I always wear hearing protection. Usually plugs (the soft plastic, 3-baffle type available at any home improvement store for a couple dollars).

I wear plugs, have them made by a friend who sells hearing aids to guys who shoot without ear protection. I guess if you don't ever want to hear your wife nag at you then don't wear them.

Yea, I have tried telling them that but they say stuff like "That won't happen to me". Unfortuately they will figure out the hard way, and when they do lose their hearing I will be there with an I told you so. [;)]

That is good advice. I am planning on doing a lot more solo shooting.

I keep forgeting to ask my father/his friends but when in the military at war did any of you wear hearing protection? With all those big and small guns one would go deaf pretty fast I would assume.

As a retired LEO in NJ, I am required to qualify twice a year in order to carry under HR218.

During practice we use eye and ear protection, however when we shoot to qualify the eyes and ears come off as you will NOT have them on in a real life situation.
