when i turned 21, on the very day, i was waiting tables hoping that i wasn't going to spit blood on someones food because i had 2 wisdom teeth pulled that morning. guns and alcohol were not a priority that night.

21 didn't seem to be a major milestone for me. I was out of the Army a month. I'd been being served since I was 16, and had not yet purchased my first sidearm. I had owned pistols since about 8 or 9, and rifles since 11, I think.

But, my wives have all called me a "dork".

When I was growing up legal age to drink was 19. You could order a rifle or handgun out of a catalog. Times have changed! [:(]

when I was 17-19 I used to go to a local store to buy handgun ammo and never got I.D.ed on several occasions but when I was 21 I was in the same store buying brake cleaner for my torino and got I.D.ed for that. go figure huh.[:D]

18 was the legal drinking age. No problem getting booze or "sneaking in" clubs in Ft. Lauderdale when I was 16. No mothers against drunk drivers (MADD) in the late '70s, early '80s.

Turning 21 was a big deal. Bought my first handgun...a used Series 70 Colt.[:p]

more excited that you were turning 21 because you could legally buy a handgun yourself, then because you could drink. When I tunrned 21 this last year I told my girlfriend this and her response was a roll of the eyes and "you are a dork."[:p]

    +1 didn't start drinking till I was 23/24.

I had been drinking in the hills of W.PA since I was 14 or so.

But, I had a PT92 on lay-away at a small, now defunct, gunshop here in Phx (Scottsdale) and on Feb 4, 1989, I paid off the balance and took that bad boy home!

It was a great gun, ate anything you'd care to run through it, even 5 cent a round Egyptian MG ammo with hard, corrosive primers, tho sometimes you have to drop the hammer on them twice.

    My how times have changed.

Owned guns, drank what I wanted, in my teens.

Turning 21 was no big deal.
Now turning 25? (I think it was) meant something.
Car insurance rates went down. (If you were a good driver [;)])
A sure sign of being over the hill. [B)]

When I turned 21 I had already had more than enough to drink and my fair share of empty pockets from the titty bar scene. Though I was taken out for the night by the best of friends and the whole time thinking. So much for going to get that pistol tomorrow. So a week later, almost 48 of feeling like crap and another 72 hours of waiting to be able to pick up the gun (Illinois law) I finally got it. Great feeling and I shot, and shot, and shot, ect...............

    jon,
thats sounds exactly like my story! i was so anxious and itchy to turn 21 only to get my first handgun, i could give a crap about buying my first beer(legally at least) and ironically my girfirend look at me rolled her eyes and said "your a dork". hahahaha![:D]

Having lost my youth and innocence long before I was 21, that day in 1969 had very little significance for me. Actually I remember turning 20 much more- as I layed in a hospital bed in Danang, recovering from wounds; such a way to go out of being a teenager.

The first extra $250 I got after I turned 21 bought me my Beretta U22, my first pistol. I was stoked. I bought it at a gun show from I guy I worked with and could barely wait the 3 days until I could pick it up. When that day came, I drove 50 miles to the gun shop after working 7 hours and going to college for 5 hours. YOU might say "big deal, it's just a Neos," but this was 4 years ago when the Neos was still new and shops couldn't keep them in stock.

The Ruger is a nearly 95% 1982 MkII Target that I probably over paid for last February.
