Christmas Eve 9-11!!!
First off Merry Christmas everyone!
Had a visit from the city fire department last evening at my Dad's house during Christmas dinner.
We had just gotten through the soup course, and had just sat the perogies on the table, and the carbon monoxide detector in the dining room starts going off. Checked the code on the back, and it was not a low battery problem, but a detection of CO. Took it outside for a few minutes, brough it back in, it started going off again. Mike got the CO detector from the upstairs, which was not going off, and brought it down to the dining room, which promptly began going off, too. So we cranked open some windows, and I called my brother Chris, who is a firefighter for the city. I told him what was going on, and he said he would come over with the CO monitor.
In the meantime, Mike and my Uncle Bob (who I hope takes us up on our suggestion to become a GB forum member) went down to the basement to check things out. It seems that earlier this week, my Dad had decided to clean some dust off the furnace (gas) vents and door, and had left the door open a smidge, which was acting as an air draw, and causing the furnace to not vent properly, and we were getting an accumulation of carbon monoxide in the dining room.
Mike took the furnace filters outside and cleaned them off, reinserted them and made sure the furnace door was shut properly.
Chris checked out the rest of the house, which showed a modest accumulation of CO in the upstairs hallway, nothing to cause any sort of illness, and then later checks showed it was discipating. Then Mike took the CO detector outside for a little while to clear them out, and then replaced them, and I sent my brother back to the fire station with a ton of perogies, soup, and seafood.
Christmas Eve is always memorable for some reason, but this was certainly one for the books![;)][:D]

Those detectors sure paid for themselves. Could have been much different if someone went to sleep for the evening without knowing there ws a problem. 0 -

Y'all almost wound up with your names in the paper for sure.
We now run CO detectors in all 4 of our rental houses. I get those ones at Home Depot that also are smoke detectors, and they talk to you. A female voice comes on, after some beeps, and says whether you have a fire or CO problem.

Absolutely. Considering my brother was working the night-shift last night and wouldn't have gotten home til 7AM, it could have turned out much differently.

The first floor was a First Alert don't know the model #, the upstairs was a Response, ditto on the model #. I could find out if you wish. As I said, brother is a city firefighter, so he makes sure all floors have CO and smoke detectors, and he knows the good ones.0 -
Glad everything is ok now. We have the hard wired combination Smoke/CO detectors in my both homes. Worth the small price to save a life. 0 -
