It was just after midnight when the 69th Squadron of Israeli F-15Is crossed the Syrian coast-line. On the ground, Syria's formidable air defences went dead. An audacious raid on a Syrian target 50 miles from the Iraqi border was under way.

At a rendezvous point on the ground, a Shaldag air force commando team was waiting to direct their laser beams at the target for the approaching jets. The team had arrived a day earlier, taking up position near a large underground depot. Soon the bunkers were in flames.
Ten days after the jets reached home, their mission was the focus of intense speculation this weekend amid claims that Israel believed it had destroyed a cache of nuclear materials from North Korea.
The Israeli government was not saying. "The security sources and IDF [Israeli Defence Forces] soldiers are demonstrating unusual courage," said Ehud Olmert, the prime minister. "We naturally cannot always show the public our cards."
The Syrians were also keeping mum. "I cannot reveal the details," said Farouk al-Sharaa, the vice-president. "All I can say is the military and political echelon is looking into a series of responses as we speak. Results are forthcoming." The official story that the target comprised weapons destined for Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed Lebanese Shiite group, appeared to be crumbling in the face of widespread scepticism.
Andrew Semmel, a senior US State Department official, said Syria might have obtained nuclear equipment from "secret suppliers", and added that there were a "number of foreign technicians" in the country.
Asked if they could be North Korean, he replied: "There are North Korean people there. There's no question about that." He said a network run by AQ Khan, the disgraced creator of Pakistan's nuclear weapons, could be involved.

Although if it is nuke material, the Syrians don't need a bomb to stick it to Israel - they could just chuck the debris over the border and let the Israelis deal with the fallout.0 -
It's only a matter of time until somebody (Syria, North Korea, et al) delivers a nuke on a target (Israel, U.S. et al) and changes the world. 0 -

I disagree that "it's only a matter of time." It assumes anyone would use them even if they got them.
Having nukes is a great way to maintain the status quo because the threat of their use is more productive than actually using them.
Using them in the face of certain retaliation would be suicide... and you will note that as much as these mullahs advocate suicide as a path to glory, none of them is keen on being first in that particular line.[;)]0 -
the fly combat missions everyday with F-15 and F-16.

i worked on equipment for missles long ago for the U.S. there is only one country that receives the same updates our military does 0 -

+1 - I agree that it is only a matter of time if a country like Iran gets them. Disorganized, unorganized, rougue, third world, barbaric nations cannot now and never will be able to handle the responsibility that comes with being a Nuclear power. The fact that Pakistan has nukes scares me the most. I doubt even North Korea would use them. The fear with North Korea is that they would be sold to countries like Iran, not that they would use them.0 -
The F-15 is the worlds finest fighting aircraft, with the sole exception of the F-22, and we are not selling/giving away F-22s.

The F-15I is a slightly downgraded F-15E Mudhen. It is the second-best (after the F-15E) ground attack aircraft on the planet.0 -

I agree w/spaniel's post. MAD only works as a deterrent between "civilized" societies....not the Muslim radicals.
EMM still thinks we are fighting the Cold War. This is a new time, a new war. It is crucial for our security/economy/quality of life that Syria, Iran and the terroists don't get their hands on nukes.
I salute the brave men & women of the IDF for another successful mission. I have no problem with of our tax dollars funding the State of Israel.0
