Did'nt they stash a $20 bill in a chamber of a 6 shooter in the 1800's for the undertaker? 5 shot?

There were early revolvers of many different numbers. The early Colts (Paterson #1) were 5 shot revolvers. This was 1837 time frame.

Even before that were repeating flintlocks, some had sliding locks, some had revolving cylinders. I believe the Puckle Gun had up to 12, and that was around 1720 or so.

The earliest that I can think of that was 6 shot was the Colt 1849, unless you are including pepperbox pistols into the mix as well.

As Bill Clinton might say, it depends on what your definition of a revolver is [8D]

    Six was Captain Walker's idea.

It is six because when you went to kill someone, you "deep sixed" the guy. This, of course, can be verified using the infallible source, Wikipedia.

probably came down to engineering, trade off of size vs how many shots.

[8D]-Thats right Sir Nunn, Samuel Walker along with Sam. Colt modified Colts "Paterson 5-shot" pistol and produced the 6-shot "Walker-Colt" --

--He evidentally impressed the ,then, President James Polk and he ordered 1000 of the Walker-colts produced--

-- this got Sam. Colt back on his feet and the rest is legend--

The 1860 is so beautifull or the Colt police 1862 But the later is only 5 shoot like everybody knows here.
But the best design is ofcourse The Remington 1858.I even shoot my old pieces some few times in the summer.
Hmm and the Rodgers & spencer is the Rolls Royce in comparison then.
Hmm the Bacong Mfg 2 is a really cute neat gun also
Forgot to mention the doubble action Rex Ryder Remington.Nicey to.

Because the first person to come up with that suffered from hexadactylism.

I can't tell the answer to that but I can tell you where Sam Colt got the idea of a revolver. When he was younger he worked for a shipping co. and got the idea from the ships steering wheel. Question: How many points are on a old ship's steering wheel?

I here present no proof, just some surmize from an Engineering/Machinist perspective...

Early Gunsmiths were easily able to divide 360 degrees per rotation, into six easy divisions, even with relativly primitive gearsets that were on the lathes of the period. Division into 6 60degree sectors requires only a gearset with 10 degree divisions, but a 5 - shooter would require a gearset that has 2 degree divisions (72 degrees per shot) - this would have required a much larger gearset. Gears are expensive.

Also, it is easier to draw (For Design Drawings)

That is surely because of Clint Eastwood: "Did I shoot Five, or was it six, Huh Punk? You feel lucky Punk? Huh? Do You?"

You squeeze in as many chambers as you can until the cylinder wall thickness gets too thin, then you stop.

I wonder how many shots S&W could put in a N or X frame revolver in .22 LR.

    I have a couple "J" frames that hold 8 and a "K" frame that holds 10. Maybe 15 rounds in an "N" frame...? [:)][:)]
